About Adam

My passion for math education took root at the Westchester Community College Math Lab. I originally went to college with the intent of majoring in engineering. My calculus professor recommended me for a position as a peer tutor at the college's math lab, and I took to the position instantly. My success with the students in the math lab, and their subsequent successes in the areas in which I had helped them, made me rethink my major. I decided to study Math and Math Education, and thus transferred to SUNY Stony Brook. I continued to work as a tutor for my entire undergraduate tenure. In 2013, I graduated with a degree in Pure Mathematics with a NYS certification to teach math to grades 7 - 12.

I have over eight years of experience tutoring a variety of subjects within the field of mathematics, and I have enjoyed every second of it! Being able to help students achieve their academic goals and thus their life goals brings me great joy. Math education is indeed my passion.

I am a very patient tutor with an ability to work with a diverse body of students coming from a variety of math backgrounds. I am just as comfortable helping the A- honors student work towards raising his grade to an A+ as I am helping the artistic literature-loving student overcome her fear of algebra. My teaching style allows the student to develop a conceptual understanding of the material, as opposed to just memorizing a formula or parroting back an algorithm. There is more than one way to solve every math problem. If I find that one method is not working with a particular student, I will find a different way to illustrate the material. A typical tutoring session will consist of modeling, explanations, examples, and, of course, many, many practice problems! At the same time, I am constantly assessing the student's understanding of the material and can pace the session accordingly.

My favorite places to tutor are in libraries and coffee shops. However, I am amenable to working at the student's home.

Thank you for visiting my page! Feel free to contact me for more information. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
