About Sarah

I have always been an enthusiastic student with a goal of spreading my love of learning. I graduated from high school in the top 10% of my class in 2009 while part of multiple honor societies. I attended 2 of 4 years at Manhattanvile College. I intend to return to college soon to complete my Bachelors Degree and then obtain my Masters in Elementary Education.

Last school year and again this year I work as a synthetic phonics tutor in a program called Amazing Readers at an elementary school in Mt. Vernon. Before I began I was intensively trained and certified in Sounds~Write, the method we use. Each year I work with some of the most struggling first and second graders to tutor one-on-one.

I am also trained in voice, piano, and music theory with a strong interest in musical theatre. I enjoy working with young children and also have five years of experience as a beading counselor at a summer day camp. I attend synagogue regularly and completed a Hebrew School education with a Bat Mitzvah. Although I specialize in teaching how to read, I am prepared to tutor students in grades K-3 in all academic subjects, as well as music and Judaism for beginners.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Reading

I have always loved children's books and plan to write my own. I also love working with young kids and helping to strengthen their skills, plus I know how much I enjoyed reading at that age.

Theater

I have experience performing in over 10 musical theater productions, as well as singing musical theater solos in concerts. I was also part of the high school theater honor society, Thespians. I know a lot of musical theater history as well. I could coach students in the performing or academic aspects of theater.
