My name is Matt, and I'm a patient tutor with a good sense of humor. I can teach you or your child beginner and intermediate guitar lessons OR tutor you or your child in English as a Second Language (ESL). How can I do both? Well, let me tell you!
I received my B.A. in Music Education from Eastern University. While in this program, I learned teaching methods, studied all band and orchestral instruments, and studied jazz guitar with one of Jill Scott's touring guitarists. I have nearly twenty years of guitar playing experience. I can teach rock, jazz, basic finger picking techniques, I can read music, and I can work with guitar tablature. I've had plenty of opportunities to perform live as a paid musician in a band, and as a church guitarist. I've also co-directed a mini musical and taught music to kids in a K-8 summer recreation program.
If it's ESL help you're looking for, most of my professional life has been dedicated to helping students of all ages reach their English language learning goals. After earning my CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), I taught children in South Korea for a year. I then returned home to the U.S. and spent the next six years teaching ESL to adults at various institutions. Most recently, I taught ESL for more than three years at Virginia International University's School of Language Studies, where I helped students prepare to enter university programs. I have taught workplace English, pronunciation/accent reduction, academic English, and TOEFL preparation courses. I now work at Global ESL Academy in Flushing, New York, where I help students with their reading and writing skills.
In addition to this experience, I am K-12 certified to teach music and ESL. I love working with kids as well as adults. Please get in touch if you are interested in working with me!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have my CELTA certificate from Cambridge University. I have one year of experience teaching ESL to children in South Korea at the Wonderland English Academy in Jecheon, South Korea.
