My name is Stacy. For the past 15 years I have primarily focused on advocating and helping my three children, all of whom have special needs. I have a masters degree in education with certification in early childhood and students with disabilities, as well as a masters degree in psychology that I obtained before my children were born.
During the course of my education I have discovered that I really enjoy working one on one with both children and adults. I approach tutoring by motivating students by making learning fun as well as finding out what works best for each student. People learn in many different ways and, rather than using one particular method, I customize my teaching to each student’s unique needs. For example, with younger students, I use manipulative tools and other hands-on experiences in order to help make challenging concepts real to them. During graduate school I frequently tutored other students in my program and found that I was very effective in helping adults as well. My teaching strength is being able to break down complicated concepts and help students use examples and real life connections in order to better remember and understand what they are learning. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education and I have certification in working with students with disabilities for Birth-second grade and first through sixth grade. As part of my training and coursework I was taught methods of teaching children with learning disabilities, including dyslexia. In addition, I have a daughter with dyslexia and have specifically researched methods used in working with children with dyslexia. I know that children with dyslexia need a structured, systematic approach that incorporates multi-sensory methods of teaching.
I have a Masters degree in Education with certification in Early Childhood (Birth-2nd Grade) and Students with Disabilities (Birth through 2nd Grade and 1st through 6th). I am also the parent of three children, ages 8-15, and am very aware of the current trends in education. I approach learning, especially for young children, in a way that that incorporates hands-on, active learning. My goal is for children to enjoy what they are doing so that they don't realize how much they are learning.
I am a licensed teacher with a masters degree in Early Childhood education and certification in special and regular education. As part of my training I learned a great deal about literacy and teaching phonics to children. I am currently working in a special education preschool where teaching phonics is part of the curriculum.
As part of my graduate special education masters program I was required to take a variety of NYS teacher certification exams. In addition to doing well myself, I assisted many of my fellow students, including a paid tutoring position helping to prepare for the CST Multi-Subject Exam. In addition I have an extensive background in psychology and special education which is very helpful for preparing for the CST Special Education exam.
I have a B.A. and an M.A. in psychology and have been a teaching assistant in Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology and Assessment. I have been a tutor for Childhood Development and Personality. I am currently working as a Head Teacher in a special education preschool.
I have a masters degree in Education with certification in Students with Disabilities, Birth-2nd Grade and 1st through 6th grade. I also have a masters degree in psychology. Part of my experience with children with special needs comes from my own experience of having three children with special needs. Through my own life experiences I am familiar with a number of conditions including autism/Asperger's, ADHD, OCD, Sensory integration disorders, dysgraphia and dsylexia. In addition I have worked in both regular education and special education early childhood programs. The combination of my educational background and my own personal experiences has given me a great breadth of knowledge. I hope that I can use that knowledge to help all children reach their potentials.
