My name is Stacy. For the past 15 years I have primarily focused on advocating and helping my three children, all of whom have special needs. I have a masters degree in education with certification in early childhood and students with disabilities, as well as a masters degree in psychology that I obtained before my children were born.
During the course of my education I have discovered that I really enjoy working one on one with both children and adults. I approach tutoring by motivating students by making learning fun as well as finding out what works best for each student. People learn in many different ways and, rather than using one particular method, I customize my teaching to each student’s unique needs. For example, with younger students, I use manipulative tools and other hands-on experiences in order to help make challenging concepts real to them. During graduate school I frequently tutored other students in my program and found that I was very effective in helping adults as well. My teaching strength is being able to break down complicated concepts and help students use examples and real life connections in order to better remember and understand what they are learning. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. I have a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education and I have certification in working with students with disabilities for Birth-second grade and first through sixth grade. As part of my training and coursework I was taught methods of teaching children with learning disabilities, including dyslexia. In addition, I have a daughter with dyslexia and have specifically researched methods used in working with children with dyslexia. I know that children with dyslexia need a structured, systematic approach that incorporates multi-sensory methods of teaching.

In addition I have an extensive background in psychology and special education which is very helpful for preparing for the CST Special Education exam.
