In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have studied ballet from 1965-1967 and then again private from 1976-1977. In 1997, I renewed my love of ballet and began to study it as an adult. From that point, I have learned to dance en pointe and have taught classes in a local studio. I have also owned and operated my own dance studio since 2006, where I teach ballet, jazz, tap, piano, voice and theater.
I have choreographed 3 Ballets for children (having condensed them from the original). These were: Hansel and Gretel (based on the Opera), Coppelia and Swan Lake.
When I was in college, I was involved with IVCF, an non-denominational para-church group for college students. I ran a Bible study with this organization and attended Leaders' Week during the summer of 1985.
I also taught in a Christan School and Study of the Bible was one of their major courses of study.
I am familiar with different denominational doctrines and the verses where many of these come from.
I taught a Vacation Bible School on the Book of Ruth.
As a youth I attended Sunday school and went through the RCIA program and am now practing Catholic.
I have an MS from SUNY Potsdam in Reading. I have worked with children with reading disabilities, including dyslexia. I use various methods to help, they are multi-sensory: auditory, visual and kinesthetic. One method I use to help with the "b" and "d" reversal is to write it on sandpaper and have them lightly trace the letter while SOUNDING the letter aloud.
I also work on improving site vocabulary and word recognition with shapes and meaning. Another technique I have used is having the student dictate a story as I write and then they copy it and read it back to me. These are just a few of the methods I use to help students with dyslexia.
I have sung in numerous choruses, choirs and been very active in Musical Theater in my community. I have recently begun giving voice lessons through my own business, which is an arts studio. I have done this in conjunction with my mother who is within her doctoral thesis of a Phd in Music. It was with HER recommendation that I have begun to offer voice lessons with my students. A bi-product of the musicals I have directed with my studio has been ear training/voice training.
As an Education Major with a BA in French and an MS in Reading Education, I also earned certification by NYS to teach elementary K-6th grade. I have taught in public and private schools at the high school and elementary school levels. I have also tutored students with Reading difficulties. I am currently working with an afterschool tutoring program with 5th and 6th grade students.
I have taken piano, clarinet, voice and have sung in choirs, select groups, and played in the school district band from 5th grade until I graduated from high school. I have taught music in a Catholic Elementary K-8 Building. I have also studied a little bassoon.
I have owned and operated my own performing arts studio since 2005 where I have taught piano, dance. voice and theater (including musical theater), as well as directing musicals for a local amateur theater organization. I have had 2 college classes in music as well: History of American Musical Theater and Opera Production Workshop.
I have a Master's Degree in Reading from SUNY Potsdam. I have taught Reading and Writing in Public and private schools. While in college, I learned how to give tests that evaluated the student's ability to "sound out words". I also had to pass a test regarding the use of phonics. Furthermore, I took a workshop in "process writing", where I learned how to allow students to spell the word the way they "heard it" and then work with giving them the proper way to spell it. This also was useful in evaluating the way they were making use of the phonics rules.
I studied piano from the time I was 5 years old until I was in 10th grade. I took a year off and took another year from the summer of 11th grade until I graduated from High School. I have owned my own arts studio where I teach, piano as well as dance, etc.. I have been giving piano lessons since 2003 and owned my own studio since 2005.
I have tutored students at the high school level for the French Regents, English Regents and History Regents Exams.
I have been very active in theater ever since I was a child. I have played numerous chorus roles in musicals such as, "King and I", "Music Man", "Camelot", etc. I have had the leading roles of "Berthe" in "Pippin", "Lily" in "Annie" and "Sonya" in "Godspell". I have also directed many with a local amateur theater group, as well as with students from my own studio (which I have owned since 2005). For the last 10 years I have been active with a local theater camp where I have done choreography as well as assisted the director. I have been in charge of many of the backstage technical aspects of theater as well, for example running sound and designing a light plot.
I have had choral experience from the time I was in elementary school, singing in the chorus as well as select choruses and ensembles. I sang in the choir of the church in which I was raised, where my mother was also the choir director. I have further sung and had leading roles in musical theater productions. Recently I have begun to give voice lessons with my performing arts studio which I have run since 2005. I have done this through the recommendation and encouragement of my mother, who is within her doctoral thesis of a Phd in Music. Furthermore, I have taught vocal music as a "bi-product" if you will, when I have directed musicals with the students in my studio.
