Vassar College (Physics and Geology)
SUNY New Paltz (Enrolled)
I have lots of experience in tutoring college and high school students in math and physics. During my undergrad I worked as a tutor in the math and science center at my college. While I was there I also tutored students with disabilities and have tutored students with disabilities online since. I began teaching as a student in the physics department while I attended Vassar College. I also conducted research as a student at Vassar in the physics and earth science departments and gave lots of talks and presentations.
After I received my undergraduate degree in physics and earth science, I began teaching at Vassar College as a laboratory instructor. I love teaching so much that I decided to change my career goals from research to teaching and I began my Masters in Teaching at SUNY New Paltz. I am slated to graduate in 2017, when I will be certified to teach earth science and physics.
I have an extensive math background, necessary to obtain my degree in physics, and I have tutored students in algebra, precalculus, and calculus.
I have an undergraduate degree in physics and earth science and I am studying my masters in teaching and graduate level geology. I have put my knowledge to practical use during my stint in research during my undergraduate career.
I believe that science is all around us all of the time and it's not so hard to understand and learn it. Sometimes it just takes someone with a different perspective to reach students who find it difficult. I was always interested in science, but I did find it difficult at times and I believe I can help students because of my perspective on this. My hours are generally flexible and I can work with students during late hours if necessary. I am a student as well, so I understand the pressures on students and their time constraints. Science is learned through observation, not just cranking numbers. I'm hands on, so if students want to conduct experiments or get help with lab work, I can definitely help with that too. I can meet students within a certain distance, or we can study together online with the use of iPad, Skype and other tools. I'm willing to look into new technology if students prefer certain tools over others. I have lots of experience in tutoring college and high school students in math and physics. During my undergrad I worked as a tutor in the math and science center at my college.
I have a strict 24 hour cancellation policy. I charge the full hourly rate for appointments cancelled less than 24 hours in advance.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
