I am a substitute teacher, the mom of two school-age boys, and am certified in middle school/high school English by New York State. Before I had children, I taught high school English in Ithaca, NY and have been a long term leave replacement teacher of high school English here in the Hudson Valley. I also work as a tutor in my home district and have had private students over the years. I grew up in New York City, attended the prestigious Bronx High School of Science, earned my Bachelor's degree from Manhattan College, and my Master's degree from Queens College.
An important aspect of my teaching style includes getting to know the student in order to make connections between the student's life and the school work at hand. I also think it is important to have some laughs while learning! In the area of writing, it is essential to learn about the most common mistakes and work on rough drafts to revise for both content and grammatical errors. Reading for pleasure will help with all subjects in school and especially with writing. It is vital to "hear" those good sentences in one's head. Organization of school papers and learning study methods are also vital to doing well in school.
I provide lots of encouragement and positive reinforcement as I believe we all need to be rewarded and cheered on when working to accomplish our goals! Karen is an excellent tutor for English grammar. She is extremely patient. She is also clear, concise, and very knowledgeable.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a classroom teacher, I prepared students for the New York State Comprehensive English Regents exam which is typically given in the 11th grade. For students needing help with this, I would review literary elements, as well as go over the essay format and present an outline to help with the essay question.
As a study skills tutor, I would go over a variety of methods for studying and organizing classwork and homework, based on the student's individual learning style. I would make the student aware of the different ways to study and we would work together to choose the methods and strategies which fit him or her best.
