About Will

I am a pastor, spiritual teacher, college professor with expertise in the areas of psychology, theology, religion, counseling and psychotherapy, learning, ethnic and race issues, gender and sexuality issues, all religions. I am student-centered, patient and empowering helping students to generate confidence and optimism about learning, to improve writing and presentation skills. I am skilled at working with students who have not had opportunities to develop their competencies for learning. I prefer to work with college and university students, graduate students (above subjects) and high school students (social sciences, writing, humanities. I can facilitate better learning through developing greater relaxation, concentration and interest and through improving reading, study, note-taking and writing skills. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have an M.Div. in Theology with courses in Old Testament and New Testament and a Ph.D. in Pastoral Psychology and Theology. I have taught Bible courses as a Pastor in a Church for 18 years. I utilize an inductive method of teaching and help students understand the Bible as narrative. I have taught Biblically-based theology courses in an accredited seminary.

Psychology

I have a PH.D. in Clinical Psychology, MA in Counseling Psychology and 20 years of Clinical Experience.

Public Speaking

I have been a public speaker, preaching and teaching for over 18 years. I have written a doctoral dissertation for a Ph.D. about preaching, teaching and counseling, with an emphasis upon presentation. I have taken graduate coursework in preaching. I have taken communications and train the trainer in public speaking training.

Religion

I have studied world religions on the graduate level in earning Master's and Doctoral degrees. In particular I have studied and taught courses on Christianity and Gnosticism. I have studied, in these programs Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, Islam, Judaism, Theosophy and indigenous religions and have practical experience with them. I have been a leader in the ecumenical and interfaith movements.

Social Studies

My BA, MA, and Ph. D degrees in Psychology all are in the social science area. I also have studied at the undergraduate level, social psychology, anthropology, sociology, race and racism, gender, group dynamics, political science, history and western civilization. As a community leader I have been involved in organizational development and leadership and addressing issues like homelessness, mental health, health care access, violence, poverty, sexism, racism, human rights, homophobia and religious intolerance.

Study Skills

Throughout my years as a student I have learned a number of study skills including: reading strategies, note taking strategies, outlining, study cards. I have learned to schedule times, eliminate distractions and estimate necessary time for study. I have also utilized study buddies and groups. I had a course in educational leadership which included reading and study skills. Also, I have written about establishing learning states in a dissertation. I have taught a class on educating adults.

Writing

I have written many papers and two dissertations, have graded many student papers and coached many students to become better writers. I have taught and coached preachers.
