About Steve

Steve is the Percussion Coordinator for the University of Miami Frost Band of the Hour, where he serves as both arranger and instructor for the drumline. In addition to working with the athletic bands, he also teaches undergraduate techniques courses, including marching percussion techniques. He has arranged marching percussion scores, as well as performed as a recording artist, for movie soundtracks such as Despicable Me 2 (Pharell, producer) and A Change of Heart (Emilio Estefan, producer). He has also instructed and written for a variety of high school programs in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

Steve is currently on staff at The Cadets Drum & Bugle Corps, and serves as an Electronics Specialist/Sound Technician. His first season with the corps was in 2013, in which the percussion section received the Fred Sanford Award for Best Percussion Performance.

Steve is a proponent for the use of technology not only in academics but also in performance. In 2010, Steve created an electro-acoustic percussion duo with Michael Zellers, in which they compose and perform for a variety of percussion and electronic score settings. Steve has given several clinics in the fields of percussion, electronics, and audio production at various Days of Percussion, PASIC, and several universities. Since 2010, he has held a position as the Audio Production Manager for the Master Players Concert Series with Xiang Gao and the 6ixwire Project based out of Newark, DE and Shanghai, China. Traveling with the 6ixwire Project, Steve has performed throughout the US and China in both the classical and pop music settings, including gigs at the Chinese Embassy in Washington D.C., East China Normal University in Shanghai, China, and the University of Delaware in Newark, DE.

Steve received a B.M. in Music Education from the University of Delaware and an M.M. in Music Education from the University of Miami Frost School of Music. His percussion instructors include Jim Ancona, Harvey Price, Orlando Cotto, and Ney Rosauro.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drums

Ear Training

In addition to have a bachelors and masters in Music Education from the University of Delaware and University of Miami, respectively, Steve has taught AP Music Theory at several schools in a variety of states. He also has extensive experience as a band director at the high school and college level, in addition to teaching private lessons. He has studied music theory and ear training with many professors at the undergraduate and graduate level, making him an ideal tutor for students of any level.

Guitar

In addition to multiple degrees in music education with a concentration in instrumental music, Steve has been playing guitar since he was little. While percussion is his primary instrument, he has been playing guitar longer than he has been a drummer, and has extensive performance experience on both guitar and bass in jazz and rock band settings.

Music Production

Steve has a master's degree from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. This is one of the top music engineering schools in the country. He has been afforded the opportunity to do recording with some of the top professors at the university, as well as with artists such as Pharell Williams and Gloria Estefan. While at the University of Delaware, he was the Audio Production Manager for the Master Players Concert Series and was a vendor for recital recording during his years as a music education student.

Steve has also served as the Electronics Specialist for the Cadets Drum & Bugle Corps, where he was responsible for sound design, electronic samples, and mixing the corps.

He is trained in both Logic Pro and Pro Tools, in addition to a wide variety of other software including Ableton Live, GarageBand, Sibelius, VSTs, and other AUs.

Music Theory

I taught AP Music Theory for several years, as well as tutored college music theory students. My AP Music Theory students have received 4s and 5s on recent tests.
