About Michelle

Greetings! I am a certified Special Education teacher, working with the Board of Education for the past 12 years. I specialize in teaching and tutoring Math, English, and Study Skills to individual and small groups of students with varied learning needs. As an educator with a passion for learning and teaching, my goal is to tailor my instruction to meet the needs of my students by incorporating effective strategies that make learning easier and more rewarding for both the student and the teacher. There is nothing more rewarding than a teacher witnessing the smiles and growth of their students' abilities. My strength in teaching, is in my ability to motivate and empower students to achieve the best of their abilities; while working to improve their weaknesses and maximize their strengths. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Some pre-algebra math topics that I teach/tutor include: order of operations, order of operations with exponents/integers, writing/solving algebraic equations/expressions, and working with fractions/decimals/percents/factors and prime numbers. I incorporate easy-to-follow mathematical strategies and sequential steps in order to understand and correctly solve mathematical questions.

Elementary (K-6th)

I graduated from CUNY-Brooklyn College with a Master of Science degree in Education. I am a certified teacher with a K-12 teaching license in the NYC Board of Education. I have taught 6th grade Math and Science, and have tutored elementary grade students in Math, English and study skills in preparation for state testing.

Additionally,as an elementary (K-6th) teacher, I utilize both individualized and small group instruction to teach my lessons. Some Elementary Math topics in the curriculum which I specialize in teaching include; Types of Numbers, Fractions/ Decimals, Geometry/ Angles, Algebraic Equations/Expressions, Patterns,and Graphs/Problem Solving. I incorporate manipulatives and varied problem solving strategies inclusive; Guess/Check, Estimation, Solving Equations, Inverse Operations and Draw a Picture.

Some English topics covered in the curriculum which I specialize in teaching include Parts of Speech, Punctuation, Grammar,Guided Reading and Reading Comprehension; with strategies such as Venn Diagrams/Sequence Maps for detailed information and KWL Charts for quick review of topic.

Science topics covered in the curriculum which I specialize in teaching include:Living Environment- Life cycle of plants/animals, Characteristics of living/non-living things, Adaptation to the Environment, Digestion and Nutrition. I incorporate skills such as scientific inquiry, investigation, observation, gathering/organizing and interpretation of data in order to facilitate the development of science process skills.

Elementary Math

I possess a Bachelor and Master degree in Psychology, and a Certified Teaching License in Special Education. For the past twelve years I have been a Special Education teacher in the NYC Board of Education. I have taught/tutored (K-8) students with varied learning and/or behavioral needs; inclusive Learning Disability, Speech/Language Impairment, ADD/ADHD,and Autism. I provide appropriate modifications and/or accommodations to lessons, to meet the varied needs of the students. I incorporate individualized and small group instruction in Math and Reading. Also, I utilize educational strategies such as Differentiated Instruction, Scaffolding, Sequencing, Leveled Reading, and Think/Pair/Share to help students master varied topics.

Study Skills

I am a certified K-12 teacher in the NYC Board of Education. I have taught/tutored students about the art of applying effective study skills strategies to prepare and become successful on both classroom and state assessments. Some effective study skills strategies include organization, efficient note-taking, applicable study skills tools (books/journals, writing utensils, highlighters...) and use of checklists/charts for accountability of material studying by student.
