About Sandra

I specialize in tutoring accounting, middle school and high school math, Algebra I Common Core Math Regents, and SAT and ACT Math test prep.

Half of successful test-taking involves strategy and becoming very familiar with the test itself, and the other half involves reading, problem solving skills, and adequate knowledge. For SAT and GMAT prep, I have specific review materials that I use that help students learn strategies, improve areas that they are weak in, and that give them a lot of practice in the actual test.

I am patient, experienced, and knowledgeable.

I am a licensed CPA in two states. I have taught accounting at the college level and now devote my professional time exclusively as a tutor. My diverse accounting experience in the business world, both as a public accountant as well as controller and CFO, provides an added context for students taking accounting courses.

Many of my accounting students are tutored online and because of the technology, the sessions are both seamless and enjoyable. I use Power Point presentations to present information, screen sharing to go over homework problems that I have done, and white board presentations.

In my career as a CPA, I had to use and continuously develop the following skills:

Knowing how to effectively question, learn, take initiative, be curious, research, problem solve, and process information and knowledge are priceless skills, not just in academics but in the larger world.

I find these to be the major challenges particularly for accounting and math students.

Often the secret is that subjects need to be broken down into very bite size pieces.

Tutoring sessions can be fun and the time can fly. Often I transform the session into an experience where both the student and I work together as a team to solve problems and to understand new material. This approach seems to engage and motivate the student often more than a traditional teaching approach. But sometimes that approach is more appropriate and I tailor each session to what is needed at that time.

Background Check: Passed

"Excellent, knowledgeable tutor"

- Lawre, Ghent, NY on 7/14/15
Sandra replied on 9/23/2015

Patrick was a pleasure to tutor. His private school background had not prepared him for the common core regents exam. Some of the Algebra II topics that are now part of the regents were new to him. We only had about a month to prepare, but Patrick worked really hard and did pass the exam.

"Fantastic Tutor"

- Matthew, Oswego, NY on 3/31/15
Sandra replied on 3/31/2015

When I start out tutoring a student, I usually am not thinking about whether they will succeed. On the contrary, I assume that they will. Matthew enjoyed Accounting I and on that basis decided to major in it. He struggled with Intermediate Accounting during the first semester, and retook the course. He also decided to work with me. At first I thought that tutoring would get him back in shape. In fact we had two very good in person sessions, and then some on-line sessions when he went back to school. I loved working with Matthew and really wanted him to succeed. But after several sessions, I began to realize that Matthew would probably not succeed with Intermediate Accounting this second time. His mother and I had a few lengthy phone conversations, and she was able to see that he would be happier and more successful if he chose a different major. Fortunately this all happened at exactly the right time, and he was able to discontinue the course without penalty on his record. I never enjoy delivering this kind of news to a parent and their student, but in the end they were relieved to let go of the struggle, and move on to an area that was a better fit. They were wonderful people and I enjoyed being part of helping Matthew move on.

"Amazing Tutor"

- Monique, Albany, NY on 3/25/15
Sandra replied on 3/27/2015

Monique was a high GPA student and great all around person with a lot of heart, but her first attempt at the GMAT stymied her. I wasn't sure what we could accomplish in a month, but Monique assured me she would do the work. She did do the work, and with an amazingly busy senior year undergraduate schedule plus a part time job. We met three times a week for two hours a session. I was concerned that I was pushing too hard, but we had to get ready for the GMAT. In some ways I could identify with Monique. I understood her drive and desire for high achievement. Mostly we focused on the Math part of the GMAT. I grew to care about Monique and really felt like a coach as well as a tutor, helping her to prepare for the GMAT. We were in training together. I wanted to build her confidence and teach her a better problem solving approach to the Math problems. I really give Monique credit for her consistent high effort. She really wanted to get into that Graduate School program in Taxation. I was elated when she texted me after the exam and gave me her scores, which had improved in every section. A few days later she texted me to tell me she had received her acceptance into Graduate School. I was so happy for her; I had come to care about her during our shared challenge and wish the best for her. I feel blessed that I had the opportunity to tutor Monique.

"Very Patient!"

- Andre, Elgin, OK on 2/23/15
Sandra replied on 3/26/2015

Andre is a pleasure to work with. He is motivated and focused and just needs some extra help in visualizing the abstract accounting concepts he is learning. Once he can "see" something he is fine. I understand that about him. He asks great questions and that is wonderful!

"Great Tutor"

- Sadia, Old Chatham, NY on 10/17/14
Sandra replied on 3/26/2015

I loved working with Sadia's daughter on SAT preparation. Over twelve weeks, two times a week, two hours a lesson, our relationship as tutor and student grew. I was sorry to see it end, but very pleased that Zenab learned so much and increased her SAT score significantly.

"Great Accounting tutor!"

- Lynnette, Pflugerville, TX on 10/6/14
Sandra replied on 3/26/2015

Thank you Lynnette. I am glad you found the lesson so helpful!

"Outstanding tutor!"

- Anne, Charlottesville, VA on 5/12/14
Sandra replied on 9/22/2014

Anne's son was very dedicated and motivated. A pleasure to work with. And he is a bright student. But somehow he was wrongly advised by his adviser to take an accounting class that was not the first accounting class he should have been in. I give him a lot of credit for getting tutoring help and applying himself to learn as much as he could in the remaining few weeks of the course. His parents were very supportive of him and of me and that is always helpful and an extra plus to get great feedback from a student's parents.

"Puts my son's interests first"

- Elisabeth, Hudson, NY on 5/6/14
Sandra replied on 5/12/2014

I love working with Elisabeth's son. Often we make a game of Algebra problem solving and sometimes it is most fun when we disagree about solutions to math problems. He is bright and enjoys being challenged. We have worked together now for several months and mostly I help to keep him focused now so that he can complete his homework efficiently. We are also doing some practice problems for regent's exams. In the beginning of our tutoring, he had to catch up, but he's smart, and applied himself to it, and really, has never looked back. Also, Elisabeth has been a great parent to work with and it helps tutoring so much to have such an involved parent.

"Extremely supportive yet rigorous"

- Michael, Chatham, NY on 4/29/14
Sandra replied on 4/29/2014

Working with Michael's daughter has been a great experience for me and I have enjoyed tutoring her. She is very bright and has an alive and creative mind, which sometimes has needed taming for learning to solve math problems. But her enthusiasm and motivation continue to impress me, and we have forged a bond working as a team.

"Great tutor"

- Zubair, Clifton Park, NY on 11/17/13
Sandra replied on 1/22/2014

Zubair is enjoyable to tutor. He has an impressive ability to maintain his focus through a heavy course load while working full time. His accounting fundamentals were quite sound. I think he was smart to get some help to navigate through the demanding accounting course requirements. He was totally capable of doing the work, but the sheer volume of his schedule could have been overwhelming. He was able to meet all his deadlines.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have always loved math. It is a system that builds on itself. It requires developing and using the imagination, which is a great thing to learn. Learning how to think and how to solve problems is central to algebra, as well as learning the rules of algebra. The kind of thinking that is necessary to problem solve is also the kind of thinking that can help you in all your subjects and in test taking. My tutoring helps you in both ways.

Business

My knowledge in business is academic and experiential as I have taught computer, accounting, organizational courses, as well as my own work experience in companies. In my role of Director of Finance and Administration, I directly managed a range of operational areas including retail, technology procurement, human resources, employee training, accounting and finance, and worked closely with marketing and fundraising. My strengths as a tutor include my ability to explain concepts as well as challenge students to find their strengths. My background as a CPA, as a teacher, as a life coach, and as a counselor all contribute to my understanding and knowledge.

Prealgebra

I have always loved math. It is a system that builds on itself. Learning how to think and how to solve problems is central to both prealgebra and algebra. The kind of thinking that is necessary to problem solve is also the kind of thinking that can help you in all your subjects and particularly in test taking. So my tutoring really helps you in both ways.

SAT Math

Success on the math part of the SAT requires preparation, knowing how to read the question, determining the process required to the correct answer, and knowing what mathematical rules to apply. Sometimes, even when you don't know the rules, there are ways to figure out the answer. There are also test taking strategies that can add to a score. In all the tests I've ever taken, I've been successful applying all of these concepts. My tutoring approach encompasses working with you using all of these.

SAT Reading

To succeed on the SAT reading section, you must adequately prepare. Success on this section involves learning how to read the questions in a careful, specific way, and applying a particular thought process to determine the correct answer. You can also learn how to sometimes select the correct answer, even when you don't know what it is. Success on all standardized tests is partly achieved through reading abilities and strategy. I can help you with all of these factors. I have always used them to score well on tests.
