I am a PhD economist with 19 years of University-level teaching experience. I have taught economics, statistics, and professional writing at Harvard (4 years, as graduate student), Duke (2 years, in firstyear writing program), and SUNY Albany (13 years, in public policy).

Teaching in an MPA program means working with students who haven't touched math since high school and really hoped they'd never see math again, and...oops, now they're taking microeconomics or statistics with me. I have over a decade's experience helping students terrified of math succeed at the college or masters level, and I can help you too. I have also been teaching a Stata workshop for 19 years, and have presented at national conferences on how to teach statistics-based writing.

I have directly taught econometrics at the college and masters level, and the economics I teach relies on algebra and precalculus. I have been helping students solve systems of equations for a decade.

I would be happy to provide University-level help in economics, statistics, econometrics, algebra, Stata, or college/professional writing.

Econometrics,

Econometrics

Econometrics is what I do. I have a PhD in economics (Harvard, specialties in health policy and behavioral economics) and have taught algebra-based econometrics-style statistics at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral level. I have particular expertise in teaching Stata. As of 2022, I am working as a data analyst for the state of New York, but continue to teach at SUNY Albany as an adjunct.
Microeconomics,

Microeconomics

I have a PhD in economics from Harvard (2007) and have been teaching economics at Harvard (as a graduate student), at Duke (as a fellow in writing across the disciplines), and at SUNY Albany (as a faculty member in public policy). I mostly teach economics for MPA students, which means working with a broader range of math backgrounds than you'd see in a typical economics program. My own classes emphasize the traditional material, plus economic justice and inequality, asymmetric information, and behavioral economics. (Note: as of 2022, I work as an economic analyst for the state of NY, but continue to teach at SUNY as an adjunct.)

Microsoft Excel

Hello, I have a PhD in economics and have been teaching statistics for 20 years. Many of my economics and undergraduate stats courses have used Excel, so I have a lot of experience teaching people who have never seen Excel before. As of 2022, I am working as a data analyst for New York State, where I routinely prepare Excel documents and train staff in Excel foundations and analytical tools. Who should ask me for tutoring? Students using Excel for statistics coursework Who would NOT ask me for tutoring? Business people setting up spreadsheets to manage budgets or to use as a database. Other people will know more tricks here.

STATA

STATA

I remember in 2002, when I was a teaching assistant in Harvard's econometrics course, I was passing out cookies in the dining hall at midnight when I came across a group of students from my class, desperately stymied on their metrics homework. I pulled them into the computer lab for an impromptu Stata workshop, which I then offered for 4 years. At SUNY Albany, I have been teaching our doctoral intro Stata workshop (RPAD 688) for the last 8 years. As of 2022, I have been working as a data analyst for the state of New York, where my daily work is done in Stata. I continue to teach at SUNY Albany as an adjunct.

I have a PhD in economics (Harvard, 2007), which for me largely means being a professional statistician. I have been teaching statistics at Harvard (as a graduate student for 2 years) and at SUNY Albany (as a faculty member in public administration for 14 years). At SUNY, I have taught undergraduate statistics with Excel, Masters statistics with Stata, doctoral statistics with Stata, and advanced doctoral statistics with Stata. I have also supervised several statistics-based dissertations. As of 2022, I have been working as a statistician/data analyst for the state of New York, but continue to teach at SUNY Albany as an adjunct.

Couldn’t more highly recommend someone!!

Stephen is absolutely amazing! He is patient and extremely good at explaining difficult concepts so that I both understand them, but also see how they fit into the big picture. He is flexible and very easy to work with- I Highly recommend Stephen!

Great tutor and very patient!

Stephen is a great tutor. He makes you think about the answers to the questions and doesn't just tell you what the answer is, which I really appreciate. Also super smart and knows what he's doing.

Wonderfully patient and thorough

Stephen worked wonders in the one hour we had together. I had close to zero memory of high school algebra and needed it to understand my Economics class in my MBA program. Stephen started from the basics and built up my ability and confidence to tackle equations on my own in such a short time!

Knowledgable and prepared!

Working with Stephen has been great - he really goes the extra mile by preparing materials and looking over my problem sets before our lesson, which I super appreciate. I feel like our time is productive and helpful - he knows his stuff, especially with STATA. He has a deep understanding of the material, and he was able to teach me at the graduate level in an easy to understand way. I really enjoyed working with him, and I recommend him to anyone who is considering him!

Very Helpful

Was stuck on some concepts for my econometrics problem set and Stephen cleared them up for me and allowed me to work through the problem set. He even helped out with some tips on Stata!

Excellent

Stephen was patient and good at explaining a difficult subject (microeconomics). He was on time, communicative and timely when messaging. The technology worked flawlessly, too.

Knowledgeable, helpful and patient.

Professor Stephen W is patient and kind. I learn a whole lot every time we meet. I get lost a lot especially in computations but whenever we met, his explanations become really helpful. I would learn how to work on problems on my own even after doing just one sample problem. Most times, he goes overboard to make you understand without complaints or extra charges. Truly thankful for his impact and knowledge.
