Teaching Chinese is my passion, and it has become my mission in life to share that passion with learners of the world's most commonly spoken language. I have been teaching Mandarin Chinese as a second language for nearly a decade now. Over these years, I have become an expert in helping non-native speakers acquire the language by presenting so-called "difficult" concepts of the language (namely, tones and written characters) in simplified terms which can be easily understood by all learners. The innovative and effective approaches I have developed over the years utilizes a student-centered approach, focusing on the student's natural and most comfortable learning style.
I began as a student at the world-renowned Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. Since then, I have lived in China on two different occasions for advanced language study. I subsequently earned two master's degrees (one in language teaching and the other an MBA whose coursework was taught entirely in Mandarin), in addition to my Chinese teaching certification. I am licensed to teach Chinese as a second language to ages 3-adult, and I have experience teaching to students of all ages and education levels. Additionally, I have advanced understanding of research and science of learning second languages, as I have conducted my own research in addition to studying the existing research. I am fluent and experienced in the innovative language teaching method known as TPR Storytelling, and I incorporate many of its concepts into my own lessons.
Originally from Wisconsin, I was awarded the Frank Grittner Award, the annual award recognizing the outstanding new language teacher in the state. I have also been nationally recognized for my leadership in this still-budding field of Chinese language education.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
