About Matt

**Let's talk now about how we can help your student in September!**

Hello, parents and students. Thanks for considering me as a tutor.

Although I'm a NYS certified teacher with a Masters degree and years of classroom experience, that's just part of who I am as an educator, a mentor, and a learning partner.

I'm mature, seasoned, and as my students like to remind me, "old." (I'm almost 51 as of this update.) My pre-teaching background includes editorial and promotional work in book publishing, and I am still a professional writer and editor. (Hear that, high school students?)

And ... I'm a parent. My three children are 21, 19, and 16, and I've seen them all through the ups and downs of public school education.

So how can I help YOUR child?

* Writing at all levels. I am a writer by trade and training, and I can bring out the best in even the most reluctant writers. (I promise I hate the EngageNY ELA modules as much as you and your children do.) I stress the difference between written language and spoken/social media language, and I work with children on solidifying their ideas before micromanaging their mechanics. (Oh don't worry, I'll do that too!) No more tears over that 6th grade research paper. SAT Reading and Writing, AP essays, IB exams, college applications? If it uses words, I'm your guy.

* Math up through 8th grade. The state math curriculum manages to be boring and overly complicated at the same time, but there is hope! As someone who had a fair bit of math phobia as a kid and a teen, I enjoy pointing out the light at the end of the tunnel--and how to get there.

* General study skills, organization, confidence (SO much of it is about confidence!), attitude, and honest, constructive responses to the age-old question, "Why do I have to learn this?"

Younger kids respond to my silly sense of humor, while teens appreciate that I recognize their strengths before I try to target their weaknesses.

I promise you this: your child will enjoy working with me--no matter what we're studying and no matter how hard it is--and that is half the battle.

All best,

Matt H.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I'm a NYS certified teacher with a master's degree and 7 years of classroom experience. For the last 3 years, I have taught in a 5th grade inclusion classroom, seeing to the needs of ADD/ADHD children. I work with kids on focus-refocus techniques; setting time schedules and incremental goals, incorporate physical activity and art activities into academic work, and use breaks and rewards to maintain direction and task commitment.
In a tutoring relationship, the tutor and student set goals together and lay out a plan to get there. Both refer back to the plan throughout the lesson to make sure we are on track.

American History

Please see my tutor profile.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have permanent/professional NYS certification in Childhood Education (grades 1-6) and an MSed (Long Island University.) I have been teaching 5th grade in the Port Chester public schools for 3 years, with additional (leave replacement) experience in 6th-8th grade.

Elementary Math

I hold permanent/professional New York State certification in Elementary 1-6 Education (all subjects) and have taught and tutored Math, Reading, Writing, and Social Studies at the Elementary and Middle School levels since 2008. In math, I specialize in clarifying abstract concepts and giving students practical strategies for working with fractions, decimals, percents, variables in prealgebra and algebra, and applying numbers and operations correctly to word problems.

Guitar

I have played guitar for 35 years and have been teaching for 20, using a combination of standard music notation resources and "play it today" shortcuts. I teach individual guitarists and small groups, emphasizing chord theory, ear training, performance dynamics, and song selection.
I have worked with guitarists and other musicians on auditions, talent show and recital preparation, band practice, and more. Specific musical areas include pop, rock, Broadway, folk, country, and blues.

Prealgebra

As a teacher and tutor of math at both the elementary and middle school levels, I introduce and demystify algebraic concepts in virtually every unit. Examples include solving for one variable in terms of another (or in terms of a known quantity); applying "backwards" logic to geometry problems, and using number lines and other graphics to understand inequalities, functions, and word problems.

Proofreading

Before becoming a teacher, I spent 17 years in the publishing industry as an editor, writer, web content developer, and promotion manager. All of these positions demanded an eye for detail and consistency in text. I bring those skills and experiences to bear in my teaching and tutoring.

Public Speaking

At my school, I co-teach a workshop on oral presentation, coaching students on content prep, progressive practice (working both with and without scripts or cue cards), vocal dynamics, pace, energy, volume, body language, and Q-and-A.

Study Skills

As a certified teacher, I work constantly with individual students on developing consistent work habits and study skills that keep the student engaged and focused. These include:
* Materials organization
* Note taking and re-copying
* Content organization (outlines, charts, visual aids, etc.)
* Project planning, scheduling and time budgeting
* Student re-phrasing of questions and assignment instructions for better understanding
* Enrichment opportunities to help diversify and personalize assignments so that they "come alive" for the student.

Theater

I specialize in voice quality, projection, accents, pacing, character development and depth, and monologue preparation.

I have directed student productions of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, adapted and directed a student version of Matilda: The Musical, and more.

I have written, directed, and performed in corporate skits, school talent shows, theatrical revues, singing groups and bands, and comedy-improv troupes.

I'm a lifelong amateur actor and have had many leading and supporting roles in regional productions of musicals, comedies, and dramas.

Let's work together to bring out your best on stage!

Excellent tutor

I knew Matt would be a fine tutor and wonderful person even before we met him. His response to my inquiry was personable and detailed, as he pointed out that he had been a fifth grade teacher and in fact was coaching other students who were my son's age. He seemed as friendly as he was experienced. Furthermore, he proved throughout our email communications to schedule a meeting to be extremely
