About MARIA

I am currently a Spanish language teacher at R. High School. Last year I worked as a foreign language teacher at Pearl River High School. The year before I worked at Monroe Woodbury High School in Central Valley, New York, where I taught Level 2 Spanish in the 9th grade and Level 3 Italian in the 10th grade. Previously, I was a foreign language teacher in both Spanish and Italian at MS 129 and Mott Haven Village Preparatory High School in New York City. I believe that my professional experience as a foreign language teacher, in addition to my education, my years of experience living abroad, and my passion for teaching foreign languages, all combine to make me an excellent candidate for a position at your school.

In 2011, I graduated from the Adolescent Education Master's Program at Hunter College with an M.A. in Education of a Foreign Language (Italian) and received the University’s Chairperson Award for Outstanding Progress in Romance Languages and Literature. I completed my undergraduate coursework in 2005 with a B.A. in Communications from the American University of Rome, living in Rome, Florence, and Torino for four years as I pursued my studies, and completed additional coursework in the History of Theatre and Cinema. As a result of my graduate level foreign language studies, and my extensive experience living in Italy, I have attained native level fluency in the Italian language and am a certified Italian language instructor in the state of New York.

I additionally have foreign language teaching certification in Spanish, in which I also have native fluency. Originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico, I grew up as a dual English and Spanish speaker and came to understand the importance of a multilingual education from an early age. This experience has strongly influenced me in my two years as a professional Spanish teacher in the New York City public schools, where I have instructed students from diverse backgrounds on how to approach a foreign language and the personal enrichment that comes from learning about other cultures.

While observing, tutoring, and teaching students in various New York City public schools, I have also trained students in AVID, which is a program that helps them to become college bound. I am now completing my second year as a certified foreign language teacher, where I have served as the sole foreign language instructor in the schools I have taught in and have been responsible for developing academic curricula in two subject areas. The diversity within each school that I have worked in has made me more versatile in both my teaching styles and my approach with students.

I have been very excited to learn about your school and its focus on educating students from a truly global perspective, and I believe that my multilingual expertise and my years of experience both living in and traveling to other countries closely aligns me with the school’s central mission. I would be very interested in learning more about potential teaching opportunities at your school. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

María Margarita C.
