About Shara

Helping business professionals (and their families), or anyone who is interested in conversing with confidence in American English, is my passion. My specialty is improving conversational everyday and/or business English as well as writing (be it resumes, emails, essays or business plans) and public speaking skills. I also enjoy helping college students (American and international) just entering the workforce with perfecting their communication and business writing skills.

I bring 20+ years experience as an executive and employee communications professional and public speaker to bear on all I do for clients. I've been teaching English as a Second Language to groups and individuals for more than three years. I hold an MBA degree and am a TESOL-certified (for non-native learners) English instructor.

I've been there as a French learner and speaker who has also lived overseas on business. I understand how difficult it can be when you're trying to communicate as an executive, or with new friends, at a higher level of proficiency in a second language. I tailor my lessons exclusively to student needs and focus on a more communicative approach - more "doing" the language, less textbooks, drills and memorization.

I love speaking with prospective students. Feel free to contact me. I look forward to speaking with - and helping you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

B.A. in French and Journalism
MBA in Marketing and Communications
Communications and editorial professional for 20+ years.

ESL/ESOL

I am TESOL-certified from an accredited State University of New York School (Westchester Community College English Language Institute). I've been teaching individuals ages 12 through adults (of all ages), and groups, for the past four years.

Public Speaking

As a professional communicator, public speaking counseling (and speechwriting) for employees and executives has been a regular part of my job for more than 20 years. I've also presented to many different types of audiences - from employee teams, to video and podcast subscribers, and as a guest lecturer for such noted organizations as Columbia University, New York University, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), and the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). I teach clients how to relax, focus and stay on message whether they're presenting for a team meeting or large scale event. I also discuss what is the "right" amount of research and preparation for a successful presentation as well as the importance of storytelling and humor (if appropriate) in keeping an audience interested.

Writing

I bring 20+ years as a professional writer and editor to all I do for WyzAnt students. I have a B.A. in French and journalism (and an MBA in marketing and communications). As a full-time communications specialist and freelance editorial consultant, I've written a wide range of content including essays, editorials, speeches, articles, biographies, press releases, white papers, video and audio scripts, to name just a few. I love to share samples of my writing with prospective students. Just ask me. I'm also an
experienced content strategist who works to understand any target audience's needs and preferences to ensure that what I write is relevant and educational.
