I was born in Milan Italy and move to the USA in 1986 to open with my family a northern Italian restaurant. I had many customers who wanted me to teach them Italian.
So over the course 20 years I thought many of my customers the Italian language. It's interesting to know the most successful of my students were children the youngest being 8 years old.
My most memorable experience was when a family approached me to teach them basic Italian two weeks before the trip. So I had them for two weeks prior to the trip in my restaurant for lunch and dinner speaking only in Italian.
The most important phrases were dove e' il bagno? (where is the bathroom?), dove e' il ristorante? (where I can eat?). I have found that teaching through life experience far outweighs strict adherence to correct grammar.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
