About Dan

I have nearly 10 years experience working with students as a teacher, editor, and tutor. I'm completing my Ph.D. in English at Cornell University, where I've had the opportunity to hone my skills as an effective educator. Before that, I earned a Masters in English from Pennsylvania State University. And before that, I was an English major at Cornell, where I graduated, magna cum laude, as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.

All told, since 2008, I've taught and tutored hundreds of college freshmen, and I'm excited about the opportunity to offer my services to students of all ages. I primarily work with students who need additional guidance with writing and reading. In consultation with students, I provide customized lessons in grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, outlining, and drafting. I also offer proofreading and editing services, where I advise students on how to improve drafts of essays. I am qualified as well to tutor students in all facets of Literature and American History. I'm comfortable also with the distinctive needs of ESL/ELL students, having improved the writing of dozens of these students over the last decade. Lastly, I have experience helping students craft and polish admissions essays, and I will work with students to develop application portfolios that highlight their distinctive attributes both inside and outside the classroom.

As an experienced educator, I know that each student has a distinctive learning style, and that each individual brings to their education unique motivations, skills, and goals. In consultation with students and parents, I create customized lessons that respond to the distinctive needs of each learner. Some lessons might include: brainstorming and outlining in the initial essay-drafting stages; proofreading, editing, and organizing drafts of essays; developing proficiency with "problem areas" in reading and writing; gaining confidence with reading comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary; developing test-taking strategies and study skills; preparing for tests in English/Literature and History; creating admissions and application portfolios; and many more.

Lastly, as a new father, I've come to appreciate the importance of education as a cornerstone for the development of lasting success and achievement later in life, even outside the classroom. Even if we've focused on a single assignment, students will leave their tutoring session having learned new skills that will be applicable to broader academic and professional experiences.

Thanks for your time! I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I have taught hundreds of college freshmen, so I know the characteristics of successful applicants. In addition, I have read and edited several dozens of transfer and graduate-school application portfolios from former students. As a graduate student, I served on admissions committees and hosted prospective students. As a college-level instructor myself, I understand what admissions committees look for when they read application materials.

Very Thorough, Analytical and Top Quality — When I was searching for a proofreader, I found Dan R.'s own profile writing sample to be the most well written. Sure enough, his work turned out to be very thorough and analytical. His returned work showed his 1) analysis of the document, 2) edited version, and 3) final revision. I'll have no problem hiring him for next time when I need another proofreading. ...
