About Caitlan

During my undergrad at the Pennsylvania State University, I taught a non-major violin student for a semester for my string pedagogy class in 2014. I helped improve her technique after she had taken a break from playing for 2 years. As the semester progressed, I honed my teaching skills with the help of my violin professor, Dr. Max Zorin, who sat in on lessons every 3 weeks or so. I am now studying under Peter Povey at Syracuse University for my Master of Music in Violin Performance, and taking a string pedagogy class.

Additionally, I designed a week-long group violin class for academically talented youth based on research-based practicing methods. Since the class was small enough, I was able to hear and help each student individually, showing them how to practice efficiently. I enjoy working with students one-on-one such that they can grow individually and know that I want to help them reach their full potential.

I have been classically trained on the violin for 12-13 years now. In that time frame, I have played in several orchestras, whether it was in my youth orchestra or all three orchestral performing groups in college; taken classes in music theory, music history, aural skills, conducting, and pedagogy; and have composed and arranged pieces of music, be it for an assignment or my own benefit. Additionally, I took a world music class through the University of Wisconsin - Madison during high school. I was fortunate enough to have incredible teachers and professors who shared their passion of music, and wish to pass my knowledge to the next generation of students.

Additionally, I have taken the standard 5 semesters of music theory while I was a student at Penn State University, as well as another semester devoted to tonal analysis of works by Brahms, Mahler, Bruckner, and Schoenberg. Although I struggled in the beginning having not taken music theory in high school, something clicked and I was able to better understand the material. Currently, I am re-visiting everything that I have learned in the past 6 semesters of music theory for upcoming placement exams for graduate study at Syracuse University.

Please contact me if you need help in music, the violin, or any of my other subjects that I tutor in. Although my main fields of expertise are in music, I also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and have other knowledge domains in writing and math.

I want my students to succeed, so let me know how I can help you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Music

I have been classically trained on the violin for 12-13 years now. In that time frame, I have played in several orchestras, whether it was in my youth orchestra or all three orchestral performing groups in college; taken classes in music theory, music history, aural skills, conducting, and pedagogy; and have composed and arranged pieces of music. Additionally, I took a world music class through the University of Wisconsin - Madison during high school.

Music History

I have taken the 3 required semesters of music history while at Penn State, as well as two upper-division courses with a writing emphasis in Baroque and Classical eras. Currently, I am revisiting everything in those 5 total semesters for upcoming placement exams at Syracuse University. I am expected to take additional music history classes at the graduate level.

Sewing

My main sewing expertise is in hand sewing. I've needed to alter my clothes, mostly hems, to make them fit me. One of my dreams was to become a costume or fashion designer, and although my plans changed, I have designed and handsewn several cosplay costumes for my own enjoyment of the craft.

Violin

I have been classically trained on the violin for 12 years, and majored in Violin Performance at the Pennsylvania State University. I am continuing my studies at Syracuse University for my Master's in Music.
