About Allison

As a current college student, I know exactly what it's like to be in the shoes of the average student today. I have been through my fill of good and bad teachers alike, and a majority of the time with math, I find the problem to be the style of teaching. I have been tutoring in math since my sophomore year of high school, starting with my middle school's tutoring and mentoring program for 7th and 8th graders. A lot of the time what I saw were students struggling to find ways to simplify the problems and make them seem less abstract in nature. So my aim became to present math in an easier and less overwhelming manner.

I am currently a Teaching Assistant in Calculus I and II and a tutor for Algebra and Trigonometry at my college's Academic Success Center. This past semester, I was able to improve the academic performance of all eight of my students, each with different learning needs and cultural backgrounds. Given these experiences, I have learned how to effectively tailor my teaching style to each student. All in all, my goal is to help each student find the method of approach to problem solving that works best for him or her.

I would be happy to address any questions or concerns you may have, so feel free to contact me if so!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Piano

I have been playing piano for over 10 years now. I took weekly lessons for 6 years in which I became very proficient in reading music (notes, beats, scales, etc.) across many genres. I have performed at multiple society/business events and this summer I am playing for local senior citizen homes. As far as teaching piano, I have had experience teaching my younger cousins (ages 5-13) and some of my fellow peers at college.

Regents

Over the course of high school and middle school, I took the English, U.S. History, Physics, Italian, Chemistry, Global History & Geography, Algebra 2/Trig, Living Environment, Geometry and Earth Science Regents and passed them all with a 95 or higher. Two years ago, while I was in high school, I participated in my middle school's mentoring/tutoring program for 7th and 8th graders in which I helped them prepare for the Earth Science Regents Exam so I especially have had a lot of experience with that particular Regents. Also since my younger brother is currently in high school and in the course of taking several Regents, I have been able to keep up on the current Regents curriculum in helping him prepare for his Regents; so I am quite familiar with the material covered.
