I truly enjoy inspiring people to love learning! I engage students in their studies in creative ways to connect with their interests. I get to know my learners in order to bridge any gaps that they may have experienced. I work collaboratively with parents, students and their educators to ensure that all requirements are fulfilled. I act as a coach, as well as a cheerleader to encourage my students to strive for their personal best, and help them to experience the joy of learning!
As a graduate of Syracuse University's Master of Science Program, I had the privilege of working as a Teaching Associate for 3 years; teaching Presentational and Public Speaking while completing my degree. I taught as a college instructor of English and tutored students privately or in small groups in the Writing Lab at Bryant and Stratton College. It was an extremely rewarding position, as I worked with Continuing Education adult learners, many of whom had dropped out of school, or had been out of school for years. In addition, I taught as a Secondary English Teacher, and tutored students before and after school for 7 years. I also earned my New York State Teaching Certificate for Secondary English, and I have tutored privately for adults and teens.
Prior to teaching, I participated in the New York State Mentoring Program for at-risk students for 5 years, tutoring, coaching, and providing a positive role model for these children from elementary to middle school. Later, I volunteered as an English Conversationalist for Chinese students while at Syracuse University. I have also conducted workshops in the Syracuse area.
In total, I have tutored, taught and mentored people in Central New York for 20 years, and would be thrilled to help you too! I truly enjoy inspiring people to love learning! Suzanne was very patient and offered excellent advice on strategies on the Reading Comprehension portion of the SAT (as requested). We'll be back for more next Thursday!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught Presentational and Public Speaking at Syracuse University for 3 years. Speech Communication was my BS degree major. I also taught at Bryant and Stratton College as an English teacher, and I tutored students one-on-one or in small groups in the Writing Lab. My MS degree is in Secondary English Education. I am also a New York State Certified English teacher. In addition, I taught Secondary English in Central New York for 7 years. Speech is one of the many aspects of the English language. As such, it is an important component in an English Program.
While at Syracuse University, I worked directly with students on their speeches. Together, we developed various styles of speeches, including extemporaneous, informative, persuasive, etc. From brainstorming ideas, to connecting with the audience, and conveying ideas with clarity, students learned to deliver speeches with confidence.
Although speaking in public may be many people's greatest fear, I can help you deliver speeches with a calm confidence, as well.
Writing is something that I believe everyone can do. We all have a story to tell, and interests, thoughts and opinions to share. I enjoy bringing those elements out of my students. With practice and the right strategies, I believe that the writer within all of us can successfully emerge.
