I have been a college-level tutor for over 3 years now and I continue to derive fulfillment from helping students better understand material and, perhaps more importantly, learn the skills needed to become more independent in their studying. I originally became a tutor after I realized how satisfying it was assisting classmates with writing assignments during peer review exercises; I wanted to do that more often (and make a little money out of it, of course) so I applied and was hired to work at a community college tutoring center in Queens.
Working in the college environment has exposed me to plethora of people of diverse ages, cultures, and learning styles. Not only has it made me a stronger tutor, but it has been one of the best, most transformative experiences of my life. And it has inspired me to pursue a graduate degree in Psychology so that I can study ways to help adult students better understand and remember.
In my time as a tutor, I have also advanced into an advisory and training role. Through my own time with students, as well as through observing my fellow tutors, I have come to realize that fostering independence in students is one of the most important things a tutor can do. I think it goes hand-in-hand with improving a student's understanding of a concept or formula: unless a student a learns how to figure those things out on his or her own, an hour or two with a tutor could end up leaving that student feeling lost and dependent afterwards. And a few hours in a classroom or lecture hall is nothing compared with time invested in yourself to become a more effective reader and writer and to improve your comprehension and retention of content.
I have experience tutoring most aspects of English, including writing, grammar, and reading comprehension. I have also worked extensively with ESL students, so non-native speakers are more than welcome. Additionally, I can assist students with basic to intermediate German; modern Western History and American History; Political Science; and other social sciences.
I have studied German since high school and graduated with a minor in the language. A native speaker and experienced writer, I have also tutored English for over 3 years.
I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and am pursuing a Master's in Psychology.
Not only do my student's see results on paper, but they experience the intangible improvement in confidence that makes my job so worthwhile. Our 7 grader only had 2 lessons with Harry so far, but we have already started seeing changing attitude towards reading. We are looking forward to see how much improvement Harry could bring out of our kid.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been tutoring English for the past 3 years, helping adult and young learners improve their reading and writing, and analyze texts. Getting better at a language, or at anything for that matter, takes patience and determination, and these are qualities I try to encourage in my students.
I have a minor in German from Hunter College and have been tutoring basic to intermediate German for three years. Understanding a language depends greatly on mastering the fundamentals of grammar and structure, which is what the focus will be for newer students. German can seem overwhelming for many, but its strict set of rules and relation to English make it manageable.
As an experienced writer of English, most of the rules of grammar come naturally to me, but I understand how difficult it can be for someone not as immersed in the language to wrap their head around things. I have been helping adult students, both native and non-native speakers, with grammar for over three years now. My approach is to break down a particular concept so that the rule is understandable and then have the student practice. Grammar is something that takes time and practice so both student and tutor need to be patient.
I have my Bachelor's degree in Political Science, so I have been immersed in different aspects of the discipline, including theory and American government. Tutoring the subject for 3 years has also kept me fresh with the material. For more in-depth courses, it's important for students to understand how to research and analyze articles, which I am capable of walking them through.
I have extensive experience assisting students with reading comprehension and it is a focus area of my graduate study. I am frequently looking into new strategies that will benefit students. Reading is something that requires patience and determination on the part of both student and tutor and I encourage those qualities during my sessions.
Part of my job as a tutor is to provide students with the tools they need to succeed independently. In order to do so, they need to develop more effective study strategies. Whether that involves discovering and taking advantage of a specific learning style or simply becoming a more efficient note-taker, I understand that a student can only become a better learner when he or she has the skills to do so. And I have plenty of experience in this regard.
As an experienced and accomplished academic writer, I understand what it takes to assist students at all levels in producing a polished, well developed piece of writing. Working as an writing tutor for over three years has also helped me be more discerning in how to cater to particular students' needs. Whether the focus is on development, structure, or grammar I can help students improve their writing skills.
