Hunter College (Behavioral Neurobiology)
I am a third year college student pursuing her Bachelors in Behavioral Neurobiology. My experience in the education field includes providing tutoring service to students of all grades for over a decade. I provide private tutoring sessions, and I also tutored at a tutorial center, Dreams Tutorial, located in Astoria, New York.
My private tutorial sessions are always one-on-one, with the hours set depending on the student's needs. I help my students prepare for the New York State exams, SHSAT, as well as regular class exams. If needed, I also extend my sessions in order to provide homework assistance. In 2013, I also worked as a Teacher's Assistant for a first grade class in a private school in Bangladesh. Through this, I was able to gain the experience, and patience, needed to successfully teach first graders. In addition to this, during my three year stay in Bangladesh, I also tutored international students, and effectively helped them prepare for their GCE O-level exams.
Growing up with young siblings and cousins, my love for teaching has been shaped and refined through experience of teaching students of all ages. I do not believe in a “one for all” teaching tactic. Instead, I am dedicated to helping students overcome their challenging areas, while further solidifying their strong areas, through study plans accommodated to each student’s individual, and unique needs. My first several sessions are dedicated to observing the student's work and nature, in order to accurately determine his/her strong subjects, weak subjects, and any study patterns they already exhibit. With the cooperation of the student, I then devise and implement a study plan that best suits him or her. I continue using this plan if I see any progression of test results, and if not, I devise an alternative route. Most importantly, however, I see to it that while the student is improving his/her grades in school, the student is really able to understand and absorb the content being taught. I monitor such progression by giving out regular, spontaneous quizzes - both oral and written; the quizzes are not graded with a number, but instead reviewed with the student, right away, in order to ensure the material was properly understood. In addition to this, I also provide mock tests prior to the big exams, such as the New York State exam, SHSAT, and GCE O-level exams.
Math has always been my favorite subject. I take great pleasure helping students see this subject from a similar light. I teach students to see Math, such as Algebra, as a puzzle waiting to be solved, rather than a confusing mixture of numbers and letters. I also encourage my students to practice, practice, and practice! Most effective way to tackling Math problems is not memorizing equations, but understanding the purpose of each equation, which can only be possible through consistent practice!
Aside form growing up with siblings and a big family of cousins, years of tutoring Elementary students, including being a Teacher's Assistant for a first grade class, have allowed me to gain the skills, and patience, needed to effectively communicate with pupils of all ages. I believe that children tend to pick up lessons quickly when they enjoy it and are actively involved. Therefore, I like to use toys, games, and real life examples to really help students gain a visual understanding of the problem, while employing their flourishing creativity.
I am generally available for tutoring after school, from 2pm to 6pm, on the weekdays and 12pm to 6pm on the weekends. I am open to traveling to tutor students. My base rate is $60/hour, but I also offer extended hours, when needed, at a discount - contact me for details!

Algebra is actually my favorite topic in mathematics. As a student myself, not only have I excelled in this field, I also very much enjoy solving algebraic equations. As a tutor, I am dedicated to instilling the same enthusiasm towards algebra into my students.

I have tutored several Elementary students in learning the fundamentals of science. I, myself have three young siblings, whom I continue to assist in elementary science, such as Biology, Chemistry and Physics basics. I also continue to help them with their annual science fair project, in which they all have earned 4's in, successively.
I have excelled in math in high school, and even took my SAT II in Mathematics, receiving a 740 out of 800. I also took up and did well in Calculus I during my first year in College. Algebra, in particular, is my favorite topic in math. I enjoy treating it like a puzzle, or a riddle, waiting to be solved. I am dedicated to successfully teaching my students to enjoy math from a similar light.
I love reading. Ever since I was in third grade, I enjoyed getting lost in storybooks, and imagining myself in the Protagonist's shoes. I was even recommended for the TWEAK Fellowship program by my English teacher, based on my fascination for books. As a tutor, I am dedicated to instilling the same fascination in my students. I am committed to helping them not only improve their reading skills, but also increase their understanding of the reading materials, through breakdown of each paragraph, paraphrasing, writing summaries, etc.
I have tutored young elementary students before in spelling, and continue to tutor my first grade cousin, who is improving in his spelling. I practice regular reading, while assigning vocabulary of the week to my students, in which they are encouraged to write one sentence, or a story, or use the word everyday for that particular week. Regular assessments are made to ensure progress.
