Qualified teacher from the UK (3+ years experience), with 3+ years teaching in NYC. I am relaxed, friendly, and use professional teaching skills to help you no matter how you feel about the subject! I have a Masters degree in Physics with Astronomy and a PhD in Astrophysics.

Through my job at a private 1-to-1 school in Manhattan, I have experience and training in working with students who have learning disabilities such as ADHD, autism, etc. I teach Math, Physics and Astronomy to grades 9 through 12, and I also have a second job lecturing introductory Physics at Borough of Manhattan Community College.

So, as for my teaching philosophy..

There are two real issues I find students have:

1. They understand the material, but can't get problems and answers right, they just need some solid technique improvement and some coaching into good practices.

2. They don't understand the topic and need to understand it better so as to help solve the problems in front of them (If you are the second type and crack it, you may still have the number 1 problem, but that is OK!).

For the second type of issue, I am very patient and enjoy determining exactly what the problem is with your understanding, so that I can help you fully understand the topics being covered, rather than just going over stuff again and showing you how to answer problems. I want you to feel confident in your understanding, so that when I'm not there, you'll know how to answer those test questions alone!

To do this, I often use analogies which use concepts and ideas already familiar to the learner in order to achieve the goal I set out above. I also encourage you to ask as many questions as possible, no matter how silly, so that you can get your own head around the problem. I then find it useful to ask questions to test your understanding, or perhaps get you to explain the concept to someone else.

I also teach solid, repeatable methods for solving problems in physics, which sorts out the first type of issue I described above. This can take a bit of getting used to and some practice but the outcome means you don't make silly mistakes or get problems completely wrong! Good math work is essential for good physics.

I hope this helps you to decide if I am the right kind of tutor for you.

Good luck with the studying!

Physics,

Physics

I studied Physics with Astronomy at undergraduate level, gaining a master's degree at upper 2nd class honors level (approx. 3.67 GPA equivalent). I then proceeded to complete a PhD in Astrophysics, writing a thesis on Massive star formation in the Milky Way Galaxy using Observations. Afterwards I became a qualified science teacher and have spent over 6 years teaching Physics and Astronomy to pupils of 11-18 years.

Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

As a Physics major I studied math up to the junior level of college, including topics such as calculus, partial differential equations and matrices. I also taught math as a high school teacher so have experience in explaining the material to students.

Great with my sometimes-lazy son

I have had the opportunity to observe James with my son who, although he is a great kid, can be frustratingly lazy, in other words the quintessential teenager. James is excellent, patient but firm. My son has had a few tutors in the past but he actually looks forward to his lessons with James. We would highly recommend James to any parent. My son actually got a 95 on a math test. This is the highest grade he received in math in the entire school year. Great experience.

Great tutor

James helped me understand circuits and Kirchhoff’s laws conceptually, which was what I had problems with initially. After our time was up, I was not only able to do test corrections perfectly; I was able to explain certain problems to my peers.
