I have been working in the field of ESL for over 20 years, as a teacher of children, and as a writer and editor of school materials, from elementary to adult. I am a graduate of Cornell University, in the school of Human Ecology, with a degree in Human Development and Family Studies. I started working with nursery school students and then went on to become an ESL teacher of elementary students. My love of ESL continued with work in writing and editing curriculum in a variety of subject matters for educational books.
I love working with both children and adults. I enjoy making learning fun and using English games and songs to help motivate learning. When I taught ESL, I worked with children in a variety of subjects, helping them to master the English language and to get special help learning English terms in specific subjects such as math, social studies, and science. I am also a musician, and I have enjoyed using songs and chants to teach English. I have also written some of my own. I am sensitive to different learning styles, and good at creating activities and coming up with new ideas to help students learn while enjoying the process! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been working in elementary education ever since obtaining my college degree. I have worked as an ESL teacher and as an editor and writer of elementary educational materials. I currently volunteer in a Charter school in Queens.
My ESL experience includes teaching (grades K-5), and writing/editing of curriculum for ESL and EFL classroom texts. I am good at making language learning fun by using games, songs, and stories.
I have been playing flute since I was 11 years old. I first studied classical music, attending Laguardia High School and then Ithaca College school of music. I later learned to branch out into other styles, such as folk, Irish traditional music, and jazz. I was in a small band playing Latin jazz, which played for parties and weddings. I currently play Irish music at traditional Irish sessions in NY, and jazz at NY jam sessions.
In my work as an ESL teacher, I regularly helped children with their reading, which involved knowledge of letter sound correspondence. I have also worked as an editor on phonics programs and as a writer and editor for phonics stories.
As part of my formal music studies in high school (Laguardia music dept) and college (Ithaca College music dept), I studied sight singing and ear training. I regularly use that skill when playing music or writing music that I hear.
