About Lauren

Hi There! Does your child struggle with science concepts? Do they need help with organization & study skills? Let me help! I have been teaching for 12 years as a NYS certified special education teacher and have worked with students with significant learning challenges, dyslexia, limited short-term memory, etc...and I have also worked with students without challenges who just needed an academic boost or organizational help. I have prepped students for the NYS Living Environment Regents exam, 7th & 8th grade NYS math assessments, 8th grade NYS Intermediate Level Science Test & ELA assessments at multiple grade levels.

I have specialized in 7th & 8th grade NYS Science Curriculum for the past 6 years. Previous to teaching middle school, I taught HS Living Environment and Earth Science.

I provide flexible hours, will come to your home or local library. I am very patient and child centered and will work with you and your child to help them achieve academic success!

I have great resources focusing on middle school science skills.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have been a NYS certified Special Education teacher for 12 years. I have taught students with various disabilities and learning challenges. Students with ADD/ADHD have been successful in my class as I teach them how to self-monitor off-task behaviors, allow for breaks and student choice to complete assignments. I praise student successes and have implemented behavior modification systems to help students track their progress both academic and emotional.

Aspergers

Part of being qualified as a NYS special education teacher is participating in autism workshops. During this time I have learned to modify my instruction to allow for learning differences that may appear with students with Asperger's along with students who may fall elsewhere in the autism spectrum. I often allow for multiple modalities to complete assignments and projects. I offer a student choice to assess their knowledge, and provide opportunities to challenge them while addressing their learning styles and individual needs.

Study Skills

As a special education teacher, study skills are critical for my students. We use strategies to focus on key words in definitions, creating flashcards, using online websites for students to have audio & visual access to vocabulary etc. Students are also taught ways to recall information such as writing facts multiple times, reading notes aloud, asking for family & friends to quiz them etc. My students have been very successful with the strategies that are taught in the classroom.
