About Murali

Hello!

My name is Murali V., and I am a graduating student in the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia. I am double-majoring in Commerce and Psychology, with concentrations in Marketing and Management. My love for teaching stems from my experiences as both a tutor and student. Having played both chess and violin competitively, and recently accepting a job at Google, I know the value of being mentored.

As a mentor, I specialize in chess, violin, SAT/ACT prep, and general coursework. I have tutored both privately and for organizations like TutoringResults.com, Wahoo Tutors, and the University of Virginia. The two goals I have for every session are as follows: 1) Ensure the student is comfortable with all relevant material 2) Encourage the student's intrinsic motivation to learn. By focusing on these objectives, students form sustainable study strategies and techniques.

I am happy to mentor students across age ranges and disciplines, since learning occurs outside of K-12. Furthermore, I pride myself on flexibility, and will work to support student needs.

Beyond my personal SAT score, I have tutored math subjects ranging from Calculus I to Multivariable & Linear Algebra. Consequently, I try to use real-life examples to explain abstract concepts.

My focus on personal reading was instrumental in my SAT performance, and is something I actively encourage students to pursue. Furthermore, my foci in marketing and management require effective communication, both in writing and speaking.

I have played violin since elementary school, culminating with orchestral performances at Carnegie Hall. I tutor students from elementary to college age, all of whom have improved significantly.

I am a USCF 1800 player, and was previously ranked in the top 10 for my age group. Furthermore, I tutor students for both recreational and tournament play.

Thank you for taking the time to read my profile, and feel free to contact me for more information. Please enjoy the rest of your day!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

I am a USCF 1800 player, who has won over 100 tournaments. I have taught chess since high school, including private lessons and chess camps. I was previously in the top 10 chess players for my age.

Violin

I have played violin since fourth-grade, and have played with multiple orchestras. I have played with the Long Island Musical Youth Orchestra, and lead a violin section at Carnegie Hall. I have taught students from elementary age to college age, with varying skill levels.
