Hello! My name is Sophie. I am a student at a city university in New York City working towards earning degrees in TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), Adolescent Education and Italian Studies. I have maintained a 3.7 GPA throughout my time in school and I am also studying for my NYC teaching license exams. I specialize in English, reading comprehension, essay writing, elementary mathematics, and Italian. I have about 5 years of experience tutoring students between 9 and 15.
I have studied Education for 3 years now. I have learned how to differentiate my lessons for all levels of mastery in a specific subject, how to keep students engaged by incorporating their interests into my activities, and how to incorporate all learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc.)
I have been studying the Italian language for 6 years now. In those short years, I have studied not just the language, but also the culture and the history. I traveled through Italy for a month in 2021 and it truly was the best experience of my life.
As a second language learner myself, I know how difficult it can be. I take my experiences as a student and directly reflect it into my teaching. The need to learn a second language in the United States isn't emphasized as strongly as I believe it should be. In this world, we have so many different people and cultures that have different perspectives on society. In order to communicate with people from those different cultures to understand their perspective, we need to learn their languages. By learning new languages, cultures, and perspectives, we inevitably become more empathetic and understanding of our differences. Learning about global education systems has truly been eye-opening for me and I hope to pass that passion on to my students in the future.
