About Blayse

At the age of seven, I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I "grew up". Being twenty years old and in one of the best childhood/ special education college programs, I could not be happier! I have always had a passion to teach and have loved watching my students grow with my aid. Unlike other tutors, who focus on what is given, I enjoy making the problems easy for the students to relate to - whether this is by using physical objects, changing the word problem to something easier to understand or simply by acting it out with them! I strongly believe that learning should be enjoyable for the student because kids will always learn better when they enjoy doing the work.

As for the coaching, I believe it relates directly to my desire to teach. Over the last six years, I have been giving private lessons and pushing my athletes far beyond what they think they are capable of. The last two years, I have been able to coach both travel and little league teams, where all of the girls have grown immensely, both on and off the field. I believe in creating competitive and coachable athletes because I know what both high school and college coaches are looking for.

The greatest part about tutoring and coaching is seeing the student/athlete succeed in what they first thought was impossible. As both a tutor and a coach, this will always be my mission.

Aside from being a childhood/ special education major, I will also be graduating with a concentration in math. Due to my concentration, I am aware of the ever changing math curriculum. Aside from this, I also work at a local elementary school from September to June. While there, I aid students (K-5) with all homework subjects, math being my favorite of them. In addition to constantly being around elementary math, I have completed courses up to, and including, calculus.

To tutor elementary school children, you must be aware of the changing curriculum. Since I am a childhood/ special education major, with a math concentration, I feel as though there is no better candidate. At St. John's University, we constantly address the changing elementary classroom and talk about ways in which we can help students with problem solving, explaining their answers, etc.. In addition, I work at a local elementary school in Queens during the school year and just completed a section of my student teaching at an elementary school in Rome, Italy (while studying abroad).

Growing up, I was always the one to aid my younger cousins with homework because they were not able to focus in school. Helping them over the last ten years is what made me want to go into the education field and what pushed me to pursue special education certification. I am currently working towards the certification, but have had the opportunity to help those with special needs inside and outside of the school atmosphere. While student teaching in Rome, my lesson plans all had to be adapted to benefit students with special needs, so I began implementing hands-on activities to be sure they were grasping the concepts. In addition, I helped in organizing a special needs "field day" every year, for four years, while I was in high school. The students who came to our "field day" had a range of special needs from ADHD to not being able to verbally communicate with us, all of which I was able to accommodate to be sure they had a great time visiting us!

At the age of eight, I became a pitcher and by the age of fourteen, I was giving private lessons to all of those who inquired. Throughout my softball career, I played for the New York Panthers Red travel fast-pitch team, being one of the two pitchers we had. Combined, we had over 400 wins in our last four years with the team. In high school, I was the only freshman to make my varsity team, where I pitched each and every game for four years. After hurting my shoulder (due to poor after-care), I took on a coaching role at my local Little League, where my all star team captured both the island and city titles, coming one game away from gaining the state title as well.

Average high school statistics:
Pitching:
- W-L: 47-16
- Strikeout-Walk Ratio: 377-69
Batting:
- Avg. Batting Average: .395
- Avg. On Base %: .491
- Avg. Slugging %: .577

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Currently enrolled in a Childhood/Special Education program at St. John's University, with a concentration in math. At St. John's University, I hold a 3.75 GPA for my major and a 3.54 GPA overall. From September to June, I work at an elementary after school program in Queens, NY where I assist grades K-5 with all homework subjects. In addition, I have spent this semester studying abroad in Rome, Italy, where I have been student teaching in an elementary school by my campus.

Softball

If I didn't injure my shoulder my senior year of high school, I would be playing for a D2 college team. Instead of sulking, I picked up coaching and fell in love with the game from a different perspective. I have spent the last six years giving private pitching lessons, and the last two years coaching both travel and little league teams. My everyday goal is to make the girls I coach more confident in their abilities, both on and off the field.
