About Carol

I specialize in one-on-one tutoring for grades K-8 using the multi sensory approach. Children with and without dyslexia sometimes need a different path to master reading and writing. I have completed various programs developed to help students who learn differently. Games, magnets, color coding, and other tools make the process enjoyable, and at the same time re-enforce all the concepts taught.

I am a Wilson Language Certified Level 1 tutor. In addition, I have successfully complete both Wilson advanced teaching strategies and the Fundation program (phonics grades 1-3). I am an Associate Member of the Academy of Orton Gillingham and have attended the Institute of Multi-Sensory Education, completing Orton Gillingham methodology training.

Reading is a challenge for some children. Using different techniques and designing the lessons for the child to learn at his/her own pace allow each student to gain confidence. Learning the structure of the English language in a direct and explicit way, from simple to complex, takes the mystery out of reading.

Is your child struggling with reading, writing, spelling, comprehension?... I'm here to help.
Each session is 60 minutes. I will come to your home, or we can meet at the library. I will be happy to answer any questions.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I tutored children in New York using Common Core standards. These state standards are designed to prepare students to succeed in college, career, and life. I prepared students (grades 3-5) for the NY State ELA exam.

CCSS are a shift to build knowledge through different kinds of complex text across all areas.

I use fiction and non-fiction material. Complexity of text is demonstrated according to grade goals. We read and write using evidence from text. We engage in evidence and background knowledge conversation about the text. When writing I use main idea and details, evidence support, compare and contrast characters and texts, and opinion/argument. Vocabulary is built on through text.

Some children learn differently. I have been tutoring children with dyslexia for over 8 years with proven success.

I am a multi-sensory tutor, certified in the Wilson Language program. I have also completed the Wilson Fundation program for younger general education students, and advanced teaching methods for older children with dyslexia.

I have studied the methods and techniques of the Orton-Gillingham program through the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educations, and have attended the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education, completing OG multi-sensory training.

Part of Orton-Gillingham training is teaching handwriting to children who do not learn to write legibly through the traditional classroom instructions. Their difficulty with handwriting does not allow them to express themselves in written form.

I have been trained in Orton-Gillingham methodology of handwriting.

Wilson Language and Orton-Gillingham are phonics based programs that are designed to teach children reading, writing and comprehension. They help children who need help decoding and encoding.

I am certified in Wilson Reading System and have completed training in Orton-Gillingham methodology.

I am qualified to teach phonics, and how these sounds relate to syllables.
