About Stephanie

I am a versatile and passionate educator that prides herself on meeting individual needs through innovative instruction. I possess a NYS license in childhood education, but have been teaching and tutoring students from K-12 for nine years in reading, writing, math, and test prep, specifically, TACHS, SHSAT, and SAT (all areas). In light of today's technology, literacy skills have deteriorated. I possess strong reading and writing skills and much experience with the Common Core Standards and various curriculum (ReadyGen, SRA, Sadler, MCP, Glencoe, GO Math). I impress diligence in active reading and writing composition--structure, grammar, and spelling. My teaching materials afford the practice to develop individual skills to identify the main idea, recall key facts, decipher meaning through context clues, and make inferences or draw conclusions. I model active reading through self-questioning for greater comprehension which helps students to target the main idea and key details that support the main idea. I am also extremely proficient in elementary math, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry with much knowledge in algorithms, geometry proofs, and effective problem solving strategies. I have administered state tests and have experience in scoring the ELA. This experience coupled with much experience in test prep has proven to be an asset in helping to prepare students for the test format that embraces the Common Core Standards in order to be successful. However, my ultimate goal is not just a better test score, but more importantly, to cultivate good habits and strong skills in reading, writing, and math for life-long learning.

My experience as a teacher and tutor has afforded ample opportunity for differentiated instruction at various levels and hands-on-learning to assist learning. It has refined my ability to engage students and to build confidence that yields growth. I am esteemed by my peers, administrators, parents, and tutors as knowledgable and effective in communicating an understanding of ideas and concepts, and thrive on contriving ways to motivate students by making lessons meaningful.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a substitute teacher in the NYC public schools for seven years. I have covered extensive maternity leaves and currently hold an f-status position teaching elementary science and held another F-status for 3 years as Health/Phys Ed teacher. I hold a Masters in Childhood Ed. Certified as NYS teacher. I have extensive tutoring experience (7 years) in reading, writing, and math.

I am an elementary school teacher certified by the state of New York. I have been teaching and tutoring all ages for more than 15 years. This experience has afforded much exposure and involvement in various phonics programs that enable the development of letter-sound correspondence toward improvement in reading comprehension skills. Specifically, I have found the greatest success with Sadler and MCP Phonics Programs. I possess various resources including these programs plus building blocks that allow young children to physically build words using letter blocks in a concrete way. I've also used these resources to create my own manipulatives.

I am extremely familiar with all math concepts from elementary skills (the foundation for advanced math) to algebra through geometry and trig. I begin with order of operations, fractions, ratios, and percents, and then advance to algebra translation
(the heart of mastering algebra), solving equations, graphing, measurement (perimeter, area, and volume) for regular and irregular shapes, and finally probability and statistics. I possess a range of materials that has proven to communicate concepts in a way students understand and become comfortable. I have extensive experiences in test prep as well--TACHS, SHSAT, SAT.

I am a certified NYC public school teacher for grades 1 through 6. I also have seven years experience teaching and tutoring from K to 11 including test prep in Tachs, SHSAT, SAT, ACT, REGENTS. I taught 4 to 8 in Montessori and reading and math for 2 years.
