UCLA (Political Science)
My approach is individualized, constructive, strengths-based, productive, and patient. I professionally counseled students at several colleges, for reading, writing, research, improved study skills, time management, academic confidence interacting with educators, self-advocacy, career development, and identifying interests and pathways to pursue for college major and career fulfillment. I bring personal experience navigating the complexities of higher education as a first-generation UCLA student. As a freshman I experienced academic adversity. I lacked knowledge, experience, guidance, self-concept, and thought I did not belong with students whom I perceived were smarter than me. Experiencing this early in my life drove me to excel to my highest potential, graduating from UCLA and later from USC, where I earned my master's degree and a 3.95 GPA. I understand the impact that struggle can have on a person's self-concept and perception of their opportunities with education. I believe that each person has the ability to succeed in their academic pursuits. I bring first-hand experience from both underachievement, and high achievement in my education from two top-tier schools, and look forward to helping you do your best, improve your confidence, practice beneficial habits, and ultimately expand your opportunities with your success. Thank you and I look forward to making the most of every hour we work together.
I also bring expertise with business and graduate school correspondence, such as improving your presentation skills, job application materials, public speaking confidence, prep. for oral examinations, and business emails- to supervisors, colleagues, or clients, for improved message clarity, sincerity, and tone. Clients find that these are particularly helpful, since we are rarely coached in such skills essential to our careers.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I helped students improve their resume, cover letter, interview skills individually and in small groups as an EOP Advisor and in a career development office at Mount St. Mary's College. I also help students identify fields of interest based on skills, interests, or rewarding experiences they had. I help students research career pathways, seek experiences will help them gain paid employment upon graduation, and leverage professional networks to expand their contacts within certain fields for mentorship and guidance. I personally had challenges getting the right information on the web and through books. I was unable to make informed decisions for my future. I did not receive great advice or personalized help early on. I resolved to read career development books, complete the written exercises in them, and consulted industry professionals who worked in fields I found interesting. I developed excellent ways to gain knowledge, illustrate one's experiences in appreciable, tailored ways for employment, graduate study, scholarships, and other opportunities.
I am the first in my family to attend and graduate from colleges in the United States. I graduated from both UCLA and USC, the latter from which I earned my master's degree in Higher Education Counseling. I advised high achieving and struggling students at top tier universities, and students from academically and economically disadvantaged regions in Los Angeles and New York City. I have experience in academic advisement, financial aid guidance, personal development strategies, and effective social transition through college. I gained admission and some scholarships to top tier graduate schools. I also managed several applications, studying consistently for the GRE, and working before full-time study. I understand how competitive it can be to progress to college and persist through it. I bring experience researching college pathways, asking the right questions of admissions and educational professionals, and making well-informed decisions. I will help you clarify your educational and career goals, consider your financial circumstances, research colleges that offer the curricula and experiences you aim to earn, and programs which will help you persist towards realizing these goals.
I bring 3 years experience training fitness clients using an individualized and constructive approach for muscular training, fat and weight loss, cardiovascular improvement, and stretch therapy to increase mobility. I worked with clients ages 18-64 with unique goals, physical abilities, and learning preferences. My effectiveness also comes from adapting and progressing regimens to advance towards clients' personal goals and remain injury free during the process. I earned repeat clientele and built consistent relationships from my positive motivational approach and professionalism. I look forward to developing a plan with you and working together to achieve it.
I taught a college course which included a public speaking component. I taught students to effectively establish their presence, be authentic and genuine, prepare content beforehand in manageable steps, and practice with trusted peers to gain confidence. I also encouraged students individually in their personal growth with facets of public speaking. I provided constructive, written feedback on rubrics that rank aspects of public speaking from introduction to closing, appropriate style, presence, content, professionalism, and connection with audience via examples and interaction. I also developed my skills presenting educational workshops at colleges and via teaching.
I assisted NCAA Division I student-athletes at USC with improved study strategies, structuring of free time, setting study goals, breaking study tasks into smaller, manageable components, being more productive, and ways to minimize distractions. I also showed students to reward themselves for encouragement towards goals of higher learning and accompanying letter grade achievement. I also professionally coached students in understanding their syllabi, course outlines, asking effective questions of teachers/professors, and strategies to engage with the learning process if they are disinterested in a subject they need to take to progress academically.
I coached my younger brother on his form for forehand, backhand, various spins, and service. He is now capable of playing with people twice his age who have more experience. I coached him on identifying opponents' strengths, and playing instead to their weaknesses or lesser utilized strokes. I also coached friends on playing stance, keeping the legs and core engaged for more power and mobility, how to keep mentally focused on the ball, and strategies to win regardless of how skilled the opposition appears. I look forward to helping you improve your game.
