About Deborah

I was an English Language Arts teacher in a NYS public school system. My favorite part of teaching was helping students craft essays. I especially enjoyed when students who thought writing was "hard" came to my class and by the end of it, loved writing. It's a formula, I used to say but within that formula you have to give a little piece of yourself.

Whether you are writing for a college application essay, a high school English class, the SAT or professionally, the process is the same. Use the standard formula, which I will teach you but also give a little piece of yourself. That's what makes an essay stand out. I can also tutor in the other English subjects: grammar, proofreading, reading comprehension, and literature. I love all of it. My experience working with numerous students as a teacher and working in a bookstore allows me to use that knowledge to help you be the best student you can be and hopefully learn to love the English language as much as i do.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I was an English Language Arts teacher in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District from 2000-2013 when my curriculum was aligned to the Common Core. Common core focuses on non-fiction reading comprehension passages, evidence-based claims and close reading to ensure understanding of text.

Regents

As a former English Language Arts teacher in a NYS public school system, I used former regents exams to help my students prepare for standardized assessments. I am very familiar with the NYS English Regents exam.
