About Grace

My name is Grace, or as my students call me - Miss Grace (when I am enjoying the energy of preschoolers). I was born and raised and continue to live in the Western New York area. I have been an enthusiastic, dedicated and hard - working educator since I graduated college in 2004. I have a passion for education in our society and in my own personal life. On that note - I have a family of my own - a wonderful man in my life (for soon-to-be 5 years), an 8 year old step-son, and an energetic 2 year old son. I love to read, decorate, play with my son, paint, sew, run, be outdoors, write, and enjoy time with friends and family. Learning is a life-long pursuit!

I have had the advantage of teaching in various circumstances throughout the past 10+ years of my career in education. This has given me an edge and "big-picture" perspective unique to other educators. I began teaching a preschool curriculum to children with severe autism as a novice teacher and learned so much that has carried through to other opportunities and positions. Most of my experience is focused in special education. In addition, I have taught students in every grade level from Pre-K - 6th in general education classrooms, 12:1:1 settings, Resource Room, co-teaching situations, tutoring (district-provided and private) as well as teaching a student at home for an extended length of time. Lastly, I have supported teachers through substitute teaching from K-12th grade. Tutoring has a "leg-up" on other learning situations because the environment and plans are specific to the student and their needs, and strengths. As an educator I use the strengths, and many other methods to work on the weaknesses.

I am an excellent Math tutor because I have a unique perspective on how to break down problems into steps for students who are challenged by math. I know how to relate problems to real-life to create that needed connection in the 21st century. Math requires preciseness where I so often hear students say, "I'm close". Due to teaching special education as a main focus of my career, I have experience with looking for the background knowledge to connect with and extend upon.

As a dedicated educator and a woman who was taught in a catholic school as well as a lover of great writing and mastery of the English language I am a "stickler" for grammar, proper citing, spelling, vocabulary, phonics, etc. I have extensive training and experience teaching 'Orton-Gillingham' Phonics/ Reading Program, as well as the 'Step Up to Writing' Program, and several other methods to conquering writing and learning how to use our expansive English language.

I am excited about the opportunity to help anyone (child, teen, or adult) grow in the life-long learning process. I encourage you to contact me with any questions about 1:1 tutoring and my schedule. Let's get started!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a certified Elementary and Special Education Teacher in New York State. These are: Childhood Education 1-6; Children with Disabilities 1-6; Childhood Education B-2; and Children with with Disabilities B-2. In addition, I have successfully taught students with attention challenges throughout my 10+ years in the education profession.

American History

Along with being a certified teacher in early childhood, elementary, and special education Birth - 6th grade I concentrated on Social Studies/ History for my education degree in college. I love studying History, most especially American History. It has been a strong personal interest since I was very young. I am quite knowledgeable about it and am always interested in learning more.

Aspergers

As a New York State certified special education teacher I have not only taught students who have been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, but I have also taken the 6 hour course required by teachers to learn about Autism. I have also attended the yearly week-long conference at Penn State about Autism.

Autism

As a New York State certified special education teacher I have taught students, mostly in K-6th grade, who have been diagnosed with Autism. In addition, I have also taken the course required by teachers to learn about Autism. I have also attended the yearly week-long conference at Penn State about Autism.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a New York State certified teacher in Childhood Education B-2, Childhood Education 1-6. I have taught students at every grade level from Pre-K through 6th grade in various capacities. These include substitute teaching, long-term assignments, full-time positions, as well as district provided tutoring.

Elementary Math

I am a New York State certified teacher in Childhood Education 1-6. I have taught 5th and 6th grade Math specifically.

English

I am a New York State certified teacher in Elementary and Special Education B-6th grade. English is my first language, in which I have taught students several elements of the English language - grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, structure, essay and paragraph writing, etc. I am serious about proper English usage and would enjoy assisting others in its utilization.

Geography

I am a NY certified teacher. I have a high interest in Geography / Social Studies, etc. This is why my concentration for education in college was Social Studies. This required me to take a certain amount of credits in History and Geography, which I fulfilled.

Handwriting

I have been trained in and used the 'Handwriting Without Tears' Program. I have a personal and professional interest in the importance of teaching our children and students the necessity of handwriting; both in print and cursive format.

Homeschool

My experience with homeschooling is as follows: my mother taught my younger sister by way of homeschooling from 6th grade to 12th grade. In addition I have 2 separate sets of relatives who taught all 6 children via the homeschooling route. I would be happy to work with a homeschooling family and supplement lessons, or teach a whole subject.

Phonics

I have been trained in and successfully used the Orton-Gillingham Phonics/Reading Program. This program is a series of lesson from Kindergarten to sixth grade which explicitly teaches one phonics sound per day. It includes phonics lessons weaved with spelling and English language lessons, in addition to assessments and fluency practice, etc. I have taught students with significant phonics weaknesses who have then thrived through the focus placed on this skill.

Proofreading

I have 10 + years of teaching children how to write in several different capacities. I am a woman who believes strongly in proper English grammar, syntax, spelling, and strong writing skills. I have written many papers myself for my undergraduate and graduate degree. I have written essays and statements for several other purposes - and for all those reasons feel strongly that I can proofread others writing.

Reading

I am a New York State certified teacher in Childhood Education 1-6, Children With Disabilities 1-6, Childhood Education B-2, and Children With Disabilities B-2. I have been trained in the Orton - Gillingham Phonics/Reading Program. I have taught numerous children successfully with this program as well as utilizing authentic reading through books/novels and a few other methods.

Social Studies

When I attended college to obtain an education degree and teaching certification Social Studies was the concentration I chose. Social Studies is a personal interest and a subject/topic I have a strong suit in.

Special Needs

I possess New York State certification in special education: Children with Disabilities B-2 and Children with Disabilities 1-6.
