About Vincent

I was taught COBOL Programming by several programmers I had the good luck to work with when I started my programming as a trainee. My company sent me to several IBM COBOL Programming training classes to learn the basics of of how computers do their magic through COBOL commands and JCL(The language the computer uses to interface between the computer and the COBOL programs). The rest of my education in programming was from the other senior programmers I worked with.

I had spent over 5 years at 2 different companies perfecting my COBOL coding skills and style. I spent the next 25+ years as a Mainframe Consultant Programmer/Analyst at a number of Brokerage and Banking and Manufacturing and Shipping companies. As a consultant it was similar to sub-contracting but instead of actual construction it was creating programs tailored to each companies particular programming needs. As a consultant there were assignments which lasted only 2 or 3 months when the project ended. There were also assignments where I was at the same client for 5 or 6 years again until the project was completed.

Throughout my career, one thing I always did at the client's site was to help any of the other trainees or regular programmers any time help was asked for. The projects I worked on were all on the Mainframe using IBM COBOL and COBOL II (Old and new versions), IBM OS/VS JCL and UTILITIES, VSAM file utilities among other things. The projects consisted of analyzing a particular automation the company needed and programming of those solutions. There was also analysis when an existing program was making a mistake, the mistake had to be found and a solution in the form of changing the program to eliminate the bug. Most of this knowledge was given to me by others and I enjoy giving it to others, some solutions are not in the manuals and needed to be taught and explained to me and I can teach them to others.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Programming

My Computer career started in 1971 as a Computer Operator, in 1976 the Computer Programmer phase began as an Employee Programmer Trainee. In 1980 I switched to Consulting as a Programmer/Analyst. I have worked at over a dozen major corporations. Assignments covered Insurance, Manufacturing, Parking Ticket Processing, Brokerage, Banking, Packaging and Shipping, Payroll and Billing Systems. I learned many things in programming from 3 or 4 senior programmers when I started as a trainee. I did the same for others at all my assignments. I think of it as payback for the help I was given.
