About Michael

I've been a teacher for 16 years and have been tutoring for the last 14. My college education is in social studies which I taught for 3 years at a High School in Westchester County, NY. During that time I also ran the GED program for young adults, and tutored students for SAT prep. For the last 13 years I've been teaching English as a foreign language at a prestigious private bilingual school in Venezuela. During that time I've also been tutoring students both in English and Spanish (I'm fluent in both) and preparing students for the TOEFL and SAT exams. I thoroughly enjoy teaching and working particularly with teenagers and young adults, though I have plenty of experience working with children and older adults as well. I am primarily a classroom teacher, though I love the more personal nature of a tutoring session. It allows me to focus on the teaching and learning side of my profession, and less on managing a classroom and administrative work, which is a nice change once in a while.

I will be visiting family during the summer (July and August) in Southampton, NY, and am interested in dedicating some of that time to summer tutoring. I'll be on vacation so I'll have some flexibility in my schedule, but would prefer to schedule sessions on weekday mornings.

I have much experience helping many of my students from the private school where I teach in Venezuela, to prepare to apply for colleges in the US and other English speaking countries. To do this they of course must take both the TOEFL and SAT tests. I know the intricacies of both tests, and have helped students be very successful in their application processes.

Though it has been many years since I've worked with the GED, I pride myself on being a well-rounded teacher, and I always include all subject areas into my language teaching. I prepared students for both the English and Spanish GED as a teacher in Sleepy Hollow High School. In fact when I started in college I expected to become a math teacher, and wound up graduating in social studies, and now I've been a language teacher for the last 13 years!

I have a passion for history and all the social studies. Very few students look for social studies tutoring, however the few times I've had the chance to do it, I've really enjoyed it.

I look forward to helping students with their summer goals, whether they be improving their Spanish, preparing for a fall test, or simply polishing their knowledge of a particular subject area. I by no means intend to create an overly-formal environment, particularly in a summer setting, however I do expect sessions to be productive and motivating. I hope to hear fom you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Spanish

I'm completely bilingual and have been tutoring students in Spanish for over ten years. Sessions can focus on schoolwork, or simply concentrate on conversational Spanish or reading.
