About Viktoria

I have been tutoring and teaching since I was in Junior High and I love helping people figure out solutions that empower them. I hold a Masters degree in Psychology from Adelphi University, and a Baccalaureate degree in Chemical Dependancy and Substance Abuse Counseling from Russell Sage College.

I taught both Nursery and Junior High School while completing my undergraduate degree in Psychology / Chemical Dependancy with a minor in Theatre and Counseling. I am a published poet and I am currently working on research projects in Psychology. Creative Arts and Language are strong subjects for me. I really enjoy directing students to think in a creative vein.

I speak/read/write in English, Hebrew and Spanish. I know American Sign Language as well. I make learning a new language fun and easy using word play, etymologies, phonics and word associations.
I am a musician and I give private drum lessons.
I know what it's like to struggle in school. I know what it's like to sit in a classroom and just 'not get it' in spite of putting in effort, time and hard work but I have learned through my own experiences how to succeed and win in the end with good grades and together we can figure out how to do this for you. If you are struggling in school but want to succeed, or if you just want a competitive edge against your fellow students we will work together to create your success story. I have experience working with all types of students and everyone has a unique challenge to overcome whether it be Special Education, lack of interest, or taking on too much in an effort to experience it all, I can help. Call me to schedule a meeting.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Archaeology

I took several elective classes In college that focused on history, archaeology and the evolution of society including but not limited to "archaeology and the bible", "the making of the modern man part 1", " the making of the modern man part 2", " world history 1", " world history 2", " European history"and " the Vietnam experience",. I am fluent in the ancient language of " bĂblical Hebrew". (I am fluent in modern Hebrew as well). I have been on archaeological digs in be Middle East and I am familiar with carbon dating and the process it entails. I entertained the idea of being an archaeologist when I was younger but I fell in love with psychology which gave me a very special outlook on both subjects because there is more to a skull than meets the eye.

Aspergers

I hold a master's degree in Psychology. As an undergraduate I taught autistic adults in a day treatment program. My husband has Aspergers and I am a mother of two children that have mild Aspergers. I am familiar with the syndrome from both a professional and personal perspective.

Bible Studies

I taught Sunday school( 8th grade) and religious classes ( nursery) while I was a college student. I am fluent in both biblical and modern Hebrew. I can read the original text (Old Testament Hebrew) and break it down into modern Hebrew then translate it into English and vice versa. I know how to decode the biblical commentaries from Aramaic into Hebrew and then translate them into English. I know how to tell the bible stories( old and New Testament) so as to make them fun and interesting for kids on their level using storytelling techniques, songs, and asking questions to keep the children engaged. If the child goes to Hebrew school I can help them complete their bible homework, review class work and help them study for tests in Chumash, Israeli culture, Navi, Ivrit, Parasha, and any other bible related topic they need help with. I can help the student connect the bible stories to actual historical events. I am familiar with the connection between archeology and the bible ( I have taken classes, seen a multitude of documentaries on this topic and I am an avid fan of biblical archeology) .

Drums

I have been playing the drums since I was 14 years old ( I'm currently in my 40's) and I have been teaching drums via private lessons for over a decade. I have experience playing in many different types of bands (heavy metal , wedding, folk) and I have several years of performance experience. I read music and can teach basic theory .

Hebrew

I went to yeshiva (nursery -grade 12) for 14 years where the daily curriculum consisted of reading, writing, speaking and translating Hebrew , both modern and biblical. I can read and write in both script and print and I am familiar with Biblical Hebrew languages as well (i.e.: RASHI , Rambam, etc.). I have been tutoring in Hebrew since Junior High and I have written some wonderful bar mitzva / bat mitzva speeches and d'var torahs over the years.

Lacrosse

I have two children that play LAX and I was a junior coach for my younger sons team for part of a season. We play lax for fun as a family.

Martial Arts

I have been practicing various forms of martial arts for over 25 years and my teaching focus is not on the color of the belt but on the real life aspects of martial arts- it's not about how cool you look, it's about self defense. The ultimate goal is to get out alive. I taught women's self defense in college and ran a series of community workshops for women/ girls on rape prevention, safe dating and basic daily techniques that lower one's risk of falling victim to an attacker.

Pharmacology

I hold a baccalaureate degree in Chemical Dependency and Counseling and a master's degree in Psychology. I worked as a drug counselor specializing in heroin addiction and methadone maintenance at a hospital for four years where I worked alongside medical staff assisting patients with poly - substance abuse issues.

Phonics

I studied theatre and diction as a child for several summers in an intensive theatre workshop program and I was a theater major / English minor in college proper diction was a major part of my undergraduate studies. I speak several languages in addition to my native English. I have a master's degree in psychology and as a student I studied the psychology of language development as it pertains to the brain and behavior and its impact on learning abilities.

Public Speaking

I have a background in theatre arts where public speaking and proper diction are basic skills necessary for acting therefore I took a multitude of classes in Language Arts and Public Speaking as an undergraduate (basic public speaking, advanced public speaking, Shakespearean English) in college where I had to complete college assignments such as performing one public speech per week in front of the class for 16 weeks on an array of topics or write several speeches on the same topic but in different styles targeted towards a specific audience ( i.e., expository writing, debate style, influential writing) and I did really well. I know how to show the student ways to utilize easy tools that they already have but may not know how to employ such as the importance of body language, the importance of eye contact and speaking from the diaphragm vs their " head voice" so as to be heard better by large crowds. I model behaviors students can use to lower their anxiety levels and better express themselves both verbally and physically in order to successfully convey their message to the audience. I have written a number of speeches for other people and taught them how to perform them (i.e. Wedding speeches, bat/bar mitzva speeches) successfully.

SAT Reading

Reading tutor for grades k- 12

Sign Language

I took ASL classes for two years as an undergraduate in college and I worked concurrently in a treatment center for deaf/autistic adults where we communicated through various forms of sign language. I use sign language in my daily life when communicating with my (hearing) children as a way to teach them and I use these same teaching methods with students.

Special Needs

I believe all children have special needs that change as the children mature, and as such I ( personally) changed the term from "special needs" to "special educational needs" as my way to create a more useful definition as a tutor. I feel that it's up to us, their caretakers and teachers, to figure out what the individual needs of each student are and to do our best to fulfill those needs as best we can so as to foster creativity and positive growth in the child. I have been working with learning challenged students for over a decade. I hold a baccalaureate degree in counseling and a master's degree in psychology. I have over three years experience working with autistic adults in a school / day treatment setting. I have over four years experience teaching learning disabled/ special education students( children and adults) as a tutor, and over seven years of experience as a parent doing homework with children who find school to be an uphill challenge. I know how to interact with "difficult" children to get them interested in learning by taking the "work" out of homework via the utilization of word play (phonics games), finger games ( math), creating safe physical games that incorporate their homework lesson ( like playing "mother may I" where they get a turn for each correct answer - positive reinforcement) , keeping the child on task by breaking work down into short intervals and giving the child choices while we work together as a way to re-enforce independence while we complete their school assignments together. I am proficient in ASL and Signed English, Hebrew and Spanish. I have two children with "special educational needs" whom I regularly work with as mom in "tutor mode". I know how frustrating learning challenges can be for students and I know how painful it is as a parent to see a child struggle in school despite their hard work. I'm here to help.

Theatre

I spent several of my summer vacations acting in theatre workshops as a child on Long Island and majored in theatre as a college undergraduate where I had the opportunity to work backstage. I am familiar with Shakespeare, the Theban plays, and modern drama (my favorite is Marisol). I have experience in script writing, character analysis, makeup, stage craft, costume design, ushering and theatre history (American and English). I know the importance of language and the power of nuance in theatre, I also know there is ALOT of writing and memorization involved in understanding theatre history, and I can help with that.
