About Ari

I am a former high school math teacher with a background in both mathematics and biology. I have been told by many students that I manage to make math fun and educational at the same time. Tutoring works best if you are already motivated to learn, regardless of how well you think you understand the material. If you want to learn it, I can teach you. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have had experience both teaching and tutoring Algebra I. Algebra is all about equality; you must treat each side of the equation the same. I find that a little humorous anthropomorphization goes a long way - students can relate to the idea of wanting to be treated equal.

Algebra 2

I have had experience both teaching and tutoring Algebra 2. Algebra is all about equality; you must treat each side of the equation the same. I find that a little humorous anthropomorphization goes a long way - students can relate to the idea of wanting to be treated equal.

Biology

My area of certification is biology, giving me many years of experience. I have continued to read on the subject, broadening my understanding. The thing that brings the entire field of biology together is the theory of evolution by natural selection. I find that tying everything else back into that grand theory really helps students to see the big picture.

Geometry

I had the opportunity to teach geometry for two years. I have since tutored many different students in the subject. Geometry is all about the real world; too often teachers simply approach the subject as if it were abstract. I find that students grasp the material a lot more easily when you tie it back to reality and the things they see around them every day.

Trigonometry

I had the opportunity to teach honors trigonometry which really pushed me to develop new teaching methods. I have since tutored the subject to several different students. I find that too often, unfortunately, students are simply taught the formulas without first being shown the underlying meaning and application. If you instead turn things around, I have found that nearly all students have a much better time grasping the concepts.

Zoology

My major in college was biology, and my focus within that subject area was zoology. I took courses on: animal structure and diversity, animal physiology, evolutionary biology, ecology, and animal behavior. After college, I worked at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago as an animal keeper. I had the chance to work with (among others): elephants, rhinos, giraffes, pigmy hippos, bears, seals, zebras, and a wide range of birds.
