About Jacqueline

I am a former college English instructor and PhD candidate who now works as a professional writer and journalist. I enjoy helping students master the written word, whether for high school coursework, the SATs, college essays or to expand their vocabulary and grammatical mastery. I've worked with a range of students, from English language learners to college English majors looking to refine their essays and advanced skills. I'm proficient with test taking skills, strategies and tactics, as well as experienced teaching the basics of academic writing.

I taught English at Queens College while pursuing a PhD in English Literature at The Graduate Center, City University of New York. I now work as a professional writer, writing for national and regional publications as well as business clients. As a tutor, I enjoy working one-on-one with motivated students, discerning each student's particular needs, strengths and weaknesses and customizing a positive but constructive plan for their success.

Having taught English on the college level, I have a special understanding of what high school students need to master on their way to higher level English, writing and general university-quality verbal skills. My extensive experience with the written word means a superior knowledge base I can share with students, and my understanding and patient tutoring style leads to productive and creative sessions that result in measurable improvements. I excel at understanding what standardized tests are looking for: I have scored a 760, 780 and 800 on my GRE, SAT and PSAT exams.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
