SUNY Geneseo (Biochemistry)
Stony Brook University (Master's)
My name is Leo. I'm 27 years old and recently graduated from Stony Brook University with a Master of Science degree in Biochemistry and Cell Biology, and previously attended SUNY Geneseo for a Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry and Mathematics in 2011. I currently work as a research and development engineer, and have previously performed biophysics, biochemistry, organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry academic research, culminating in several publications.
Although I'm a scientist by day, teaching is a passion of mine and I have done it for well over 8 years. I have previously tutored everything ranging from middle school math and science - to college level sciences - as well as every major science and math regents exam. I've also tutored for the SAT and the GRE.
I am an exceptional tutor and have had an extremely high success rate with my students; they begin seeing improvements as early as after the first lesson! I have been told that I am able to put difficult topics into very easy language to understand - which is what I believe is the single most important aspect of being an educator.
I believe my success also comes from creating an environment where the student feels comfortable. Due to being comfortable, they listen attentively and really understand the subject matter. I don't create a mandatory learning environment and force work upon my students. I try to think of fun and exciting ways to get them engaged and interested. My students don't just pass tests and homework, they understand the core concepts and I'm always looking for ways to teach them more to get to the highest possible level of comprehension. Being that I'm young it is easier for them to relate to me, another attribute that makes a good educator. Not someone you have to listen to, someone you WANT to listen to.
I'm always looking for new teaching methods, and items to help supplement my students learning.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask! I look forward to working with you! My name is Leo. Leo is great at breaking down complex topics into a streamlined/straight forward format for Honors Chemistry. He takes the time to address all areas of concern. Even if there isn't classwork to review, Leo is prepared with practice test questions and other test preparation materials. He is patient and appears relatable to my teen son. My son is comfortable expressing any concerns about a problem topic.
Was able to step in at the very last minute and give me son some important last minute help on his Chemistry mid-term preparations.
Leo is patient and willing to take his time. He will even take extra time if needed to finish what they are working on. He makes my daughter feel very comfortable.
Leo is a very nice guy and I highly recommend him. He helped my daughter raise her grade, and worked very well with our schedule.
Leo tutors 2 of my kids. They were not very happy about "having" to go work with a tutor, to the point that they fought me walking into the library! I basically sat them down with Leo and said good luck as I walked away! Whatever "magic" he did with them to get them working was great and worked like a charm. The boys left the session in good spirits (big difference from practically dragging them in by their ears an hour earlier). They both said that they understood what Leo was trying to explain and that the time seemed to go fast. My 6th grader took a practice math test during school that he got a 40 on. That night was his first tutoring session which he reviewed the practice test. The following day he took the actual test and got a 76! We are all very pleased and look forward to their grades improving more and more. Now that same child just got a 96!
I have to admit I was a little skeptical at first. I came across the WyzAnt website while searching for a tutor for my son who is a junior. I typed in trig and physics tutor and was surprised when Leo popped up- he was local, affordable and available. After a few lessons my son is more confident with his work and in fact scored a 95 on a math test, needless to say I was ecstatic. My son says that Leo is patient but more importantly he understands what he is teaching, he gets down to a level that he can relate to. Leo is also flexible whether my son wants to go over math, physics or SAT prep work he is ready and prepared to help him. I love that Leo is not punching a clock with my son, if Leo feels my son requires more time and he does not have a student he has no problem working with my son until he is confident and understands what they are reviewing. I am very pleased with the service and will definitely refer Leo to anyone looking for a great tutor!
Great teaching strategies! Very kind and patient. Introduced my son to fun math techniques and he looks forward to his visits! We were very lucky to find him!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been playing the clarinet since I was in fourth grade. In high school I performed at NYSSMA several instanced and received a 95 in Level 5, 95 All-State, and a 98 in All-state, ultimately giving me a seat at the NYSSMA all-state festival as well as all-county. In college, I performed in the Geneseo Symphony Orchestra for 3 years, as well as the Geneseo Wind Ensemble. I also took lessons for the clarinet from the clarinet professor at my school.
I took discrete math in college, as a math minor. I enjoyed this course and obtained an A-.
I took both genetics and genetics lab in college. As a biochemistry major, genetics and the laboratory aspects are taught rigorously throughout the curriculum. I am very well versed in genetics.
I took Organic Chemistry I, II and Organic Chemistry Lab in college. I also took Advanced Organic Chemistry Lab. On top of that, I did Organic Chemistry research with a faculty adviser for one year.
I took a pharmacology course in college and received an A-. I plan on going to graduate school for pharmacology also. It is an interest of mine and I am very well versed.
I have tutored for each of the mathematics regents, as well as chemistry and biology. In high school, I mastered (an 85 or better) every regents exam that I took.
