Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

I am a K-12 certified special education teacher. I do 1:1 ABA, parent training, and socialization. I have been teaching students on the ASD spectrum since I began teaching. I have found that no two children are alike, and do I modify my approach to best meet their needs. Some of these students are nonverbal, some can read but have difficulty with abstract concepts. These students can absolutely be taught we have to listen to them to know what they need, and assume they do understand even if their expressive language levels are impaired.

Dyslexia

I am a K-12 certified special education teacher, and have taught students with learning disabilities all of my professional career. I would like to note that the term dyslexia means lack of words. This is not accurate, as the students in question do have words, but they need modifications to learn to read successfully.

Needlework

For many years, I gave been doing cross stitch, embroidery, and crewel work. I have made pillows, pictures, holiday decorations, pillowcases, plastic canvas.

Phonics

I am a NY state licensed teacher K-12, and have taught reading, including phonics for many years. I have all but 6 credits toward literacy certification. I am an excellent speller. I taught my own children to read when they were 2 and 4, respectively. I also understand the connection between learning phonics and sight words, and applying this to fluency, and then comprehension, analysis, and synthesis.

Regents

I have taught and graded Regents exams in US History, Global and World History, and Living Environment, Earth Science, and Algebra I. The instruction was at both the middle (honors)and high school (special education and general education) levels. I have taught in inclusion settings and in self-contained settings, as well as providing support. I have also tutored these subjects for many years.

Sewing

I have been sewing for many years. I can make dresses, skirts, blouses, sunsuits, pants, etc. I also make puppets and stuffed animals. I also do hand sewing--cross stitch, embroidery, crewel work, and mending. I also knit and crochet clothes, afghans, and stuffed toys.

Social Studies

I am a licensed K-12 special education teacher. In addition to having a strong personal interest in the social sciences, I have taught social studies in grades 6-12 in self-contained and inclusion classes. All of my students have passed their state Regents exams. I was a social science major in college.

Special Needs

I am a special education teacher. I am certified in grades K-12. I have taught thus far for 15 years. All of my students meet with success, as I individualize instruction for them based on their learning profikes.

Study Skills

I have taught special education for many years, and am certified K-12. I have also tutored privately for many years, and as it has worked out, mostly to middle and high school students. I have held many after school homework help sessions for no personal compensation, just to help my students achieve. My area of concentration in graduate school was the physically challenged.
