About Larry

I have experience tutoring both children and adults in a wide range of computer related activities, such as:
1) Software Development
2) Computer Science & Computer Information Systems
3) Microsoft Office 2003 - 2010
4) Protecting your identity on the web
5) PC troubleshooting and diagnostics

I am a full-time software developer in the Capital Region since 2010. I focus mostly on web application development, using HTML/CSS, JavaScript, Java, and SQL. I hold a GIAC certification in secure Java development (GSSP-JAVA, analyst # 1362), so I am trained to recognize and mitigate attack vectors in Java and Web-based applications (e.g., cross-site scripting, cross-site request forgery, response splitting)

I also have experience working with COBOL, Delphi, PHP, and Python.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Programming

I am a professional Software Developer with over 5 years of experience. One of my main tasks is to develop and maintain software for my organization. This involves a great deal of programming, using various programming languages, such as Java, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, SQL, Python, and PHP.

I also have experience with enterprise platforms, including JBoss EAP 5/6, Tomcat, Jenkins Continuous Integration (CI), and SonarQube.

Computer Science

I have a BS in Computer Science from Siena College and an MS in Computer Information Systems from The College of Saint Rose.

I have also been employed as a software developer for 4 years. This allows me to continually utilize the skills that my degree programs have taught me.

HTML

As a Software Developer, I spend a lot of time creating web-based applications, which make heavy use of HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. I have experience with both HTML 4 and the new HTML 5 specification, and I've had the opportunity to integrate HTML with some of the more popular front-end frameworks, such as AngularJS, jQuery, and Bootstrap.

HTML is one of the fundamental constructs of today's Internet-based world, and I believe that is essential to have a solid understanding of this language. It is a building-block to creating some of the greatest services that we all use every day, including email, social networking, and banking.

Java

Java is one of the primary languages that I use every day at work. I have experience in Java 5, 6, 7, and the new 8 specification. This is one of the most popular languages being used by businesses today, and having a solid understanding if its feature set is very important. I primarily design, build, and maintain enterprise web applications using Java as the backend language.

Aside from my professional experience, I also frequently tutor Java. I teach everything from the fundamentals to more advanced concepts, such as Enterprise Java Beans (EJBs), session and state management, and building distributable enterprise grade applications.

JavaScript

I have been employed as a Web developer for 4 years. I work with JavaScript and various JavaScript libraries on a daily basis.
I am also knowledgeable in DOM manipulation using JavaScript.

Microsoft Windows

I use Microsoft Windows every day. I have experience working in nearly every version of Windows, including 3.1, XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1. As a software developer, I am familiar with many shortcuts and intricacies that can help you work faster and get more done.

PHP

I have written several PHP based websites, and I have also maintained PHP based sites using a CMS, such as Wordpress. I am familiar with mySQL and postgreSQL database interaction via PHP, as well as crafting AJAX requests with JSON payloads.

I also have experience writing PHP applications using the popular Zend Framework.

Excellent teacher! — Larry is a patient and knowledgeable teacher who helps you learn in a way that fits your learning style. When I have trouble understanding something he presents the problem in different ways until it finally clicks. He works with you and does not instruct you what to do like some other tutors I've had. His approach to teaching is refreshing and makes learning a complex subject (for me) a lot easie ...
