West Chester University (Social Studies BS Ed)
West Chester U, Spanish MA (Master's)
After teaching full time for a decade, I now stay at home with my two young children. I recently moved from Pennsylvania to New York, and my teaching experience was primarily in the Philadelphia suburbs.
I tutored my own students extensively throughout my career. I have also worked as a community coordinator for a volunteer English as a Second Language program, and have worked with underprivileged students in an after-school tutoring program that I ran. I am PA certified in Social Studies (grades 7-12) and have taught World History, World Cultures, and American History. I have always been flexible, and willing to help the students in my study halls in Mathematics, Science, or in any area needed.
I am PA certified in Spanish (K-12) and have taught Spanish I and II, as well as a level II college class. As part of my master's degree program in Spanish, I participated in study abroad experiences in Peru, Spain and Mexico. I also have six years' experience as an English-Spanish interpreter and translator.
As the sponsor of our school's peer mentoring team, and the co-chair of our advisory committee, I worked extensively to develop lessons addressing test preparation, study strategies, and learning styles. As a student advisor, I led meetings with all members of a student's learning team, and created integrated plans for their future success. I am a strong communicator, and know how to help parents to help their children. Education is my joy and delight, and I look forward to sharing that excitement with you and your child! April is just what I was looking for and is a perfect fit for tutoring my 9th grade daughter. April is timely, organized, patient and thorough. We hired April to work on my daughter's weak time management skills and poor test scores. My daughter is now more prepared for class, and she acknowledges that she's more familiar with the subject material. We are starting to see improvement in the test scores, which makes us all happy! Equally important is that April and my daughter get along great and are working as a team.
Very responsible and reliable, excellent teacher. Very Patient and understanding . Would definitely recommend April to any and everyone who is in need for a English tutor!
With my time running out in order to pass the new PA required PAPA testing (writing module) to become licensed to teach elementary school in the state, April was able to successfully prepare me in every aspect of the test by doing her own research on the test itself, preparing mock exams and pointing me towards websites that could help me review and take practice tests prior to our next session. She did this all on her own time. The hour that we would spend together during tutoring sessions was focused on her understanding where I struggled during my practice tests and reviewing those target areas. I am happy to say that April was able to help me increase my score significantly in a short period of time thus enabling me to successfully pass the PAPA test. I found her to be someone that makes things easy to understand and someone who has a lot of passion for what she is doing. She was almost as happy as I was to hear that I passed!! I would highly recommend April!
April is very patient, kind and smart. My son has ADD and is very difficult to keep on track. She was awesome!
April is a knowledgeable and talented teacher who successfully reaches students from diverse backgrounds and creatively adjusts program in order to focus on the areas of special attention. She’s been helping me to improve my skills in English as a second language at the advanced level, always demonstrating deep understanding of tutoring non-native speakers. April offers a strong academic knowledge with a creative style of teaching that makes learning both meaningful and fun.
April is great! She is flexible in her hours and always comes prepared. She is focused and enthusiastic, and has gone above and beyond as a tutor :)
April is working with my high school son and preparing him for his upcoming SAT test.
He believes that she is doing a great job breaking things down into a solid skill base. She is teaching him how to fish instead of feeding him a fish.
She is strengthening his weak points as well as his assets.
April has been wonderful to work with. At our first meeting she asked me where I wanted her to help and what I needed to learn. She then put together the tutoring tailored to me and my schedule. I have found her to very patient and willing to work with someone that is challenged in learning a new language. With her as my tutor I will be able to speak Spanish within the time frame needed.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Social Studies degree concentrating in History, and am state certified to teach grades 7-12. I have focused on world history for the past six years, but I taught US history for three years, and can easily tutor a student in American history as well.
I have taught English as a Second Language for approximately 15 years as a volunteer. In my studies for my History degree and state teacher certifications, I obviously needed to be able to express myself well in English. In my extended studies of the Spanish language, I have come to understand English grammar much more deeply.
I have volunteered as an English tutor throughout most of my adult life, indeed, beginning as a seventeen year old freshman in college. For approximately eight years, I served as the coordinator for our church's community ESL classes. I have experience tutoring students at all proficiency levels and have trained other ESL tutors in instructional methods. I recently completed my master's thesis on second language acquisition, as part of my MA in Spanish.
I have tutored students in all major content areas for some time, and have extensive experience in test preparation for the SAT and teacher certification exams. I have worked with high school students, college students, and graduate students in a variety of content areas. I can certainly help an adult student to achieve a passing score on the GED. I would look forward to the opportunity to help a young adult to attain his or her dreams.
In my non-Western World Cultures and History class, we spent a great deal of time studying the geography of Southwest Asia, North Africa, Sub-saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia, East Asia, and Latin America.
Between teaching and studying the Spanish language and teaching ESL as a volunteer, I have studied linguistics, phonetics, and other aspects of the structure of language. I recently completed a master's thesis that was focused on second language acquisition and how to help students to learn the structure of language.
I began college as an English major and, though I changed to History and Spanish within my freshman year, I have always been an avid reader. I love classic British and American literature, and my Spanish MA has included extensive study and analysis of Spanish and Latin American literature.
I took the general Praxis exams, as well as subject-specific exams in Social Studies and Spanish to become certified as an educator by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. My scores on all tests (including general knowledge) were well above average, and far exceeded the minimum scores required to pass (usually by 30-40 points). I have tutored three Praxis students since working with WyzAnt, and all three have been very pleased with my work. I am aware of the recent changes to Pennsylvania's testing requirements, and have also developed materials to use in preparation for the PAPA.
After ten years of grading essays and other student work, I can identify errors in writing samples fairly quickly. I have always tried to coach my students as writers by not only pointing out mistakes but modeling and explaining how to make their writing more interesting, clear, and grammatically accurate.
Understanding what one reads is foundational to growing as a student. As a history teacher, I gave frequent reading quizzes and spent extensive time in class training my middle school students to read nonfiction materials effectively.
In my non-Western World Cultures and History class, I spent significant time in each unit discussing the dominant religions of each region studied. I have taught extensively about Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and Hinduism.
While I took the SAT many years ago, I did extremely well on the reading section of the test when I took it. Since that time, I have devoted much of my life to language, as a Spanish teacher, linguistics student, and English as a Second Language tutor. I am a strong reader and have frequently helped students to develop effective decoding techniques and memory strategies for vocabulary.
I have devoted much of my time and energy to growing as a writer, whether in English or in Spanish. I have helped second language students learn to express themselves in English, and have helped my history students to write well in their first language. I often proofread submissions to newsletters and other small community and church publications because I have a strong command of English grammar and appropriate form and style.
I am fluent in Spanish. I have taught Spanish for ten years, have my MA in Spanish, and have studied in Spain, Peru and Mexico. I have served as a volunteer English-Spanish interpreter and translator and have devoted much of my life to mastering this beautiful, enchanting language.
I have always been a strong speller, and, because of my work in both the English and Spanish languages, usually see patterns and rules that can help students to master spelling. As part of my ESL program, I often taught phonics to non-native speakers, with the goal of making our crazy English spelling system a little more manageable for them.
As an advisor to seventh grade students for seven years, I developed countless lessons on study skills and test preparation. As the co-chair of our school's advisory committee, I also helped other teachers to create similar lessons for grades 6-9.
I have tutored students in English as a Second Language for most of my adult life. While all of my experience has been as a volunteer, I have often taken a leading role in coordinating small (church-based) community ESL programs. My formal education and professional training is in Spanish foreign language education; however, my master's thesis focused on second language acquisition in general, and my years of professional experience as a Spanish teacher have always helped me immensely in my work as an ESL tutor. I am familiar with the TOEFL, and have worked with TOEFL students in the past.
I have always had a fairly well developed vocabulary because I read extensively and love words. Being fluent in Spanish has helped me to decipher Latin-based English words and has expanded my English vocabulary as well.
I taught non-Western World history for six years. My knowledge of European history is not as fresh, but I have a degree in Social Studies with a concentration in history, and taught European history for two years.
As I mentioned in the proofreading description, I have always sought to coach my students as writers. Expressing oneself well in writing is critical to almost any academic pursuit. In addition to helping students to write essays and research papers, I enjoy creative writing and blogging.
