Hello All!

I currently live in the Saugerties area with my husband, children and our little dog. I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, hiking, playing sports, reading, drawing, and writing. I like to be creative and I like to work and learn with other people, no matter their age! I worked as a Teacher Assistant in a school focusing on Autism Spectrum Disorder and I taught language, which means I focused on helping my students communicate through pictures, sign language, or to "use their words" appropriately.

I graduated from Saugerties High School in 2006 and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Health Science, focusing on Biopsychology, wellness and disability from Russell Sage College in 2009. In 2011, I graduated with a Master's of Science in Elementary Education from SUNY New Paltz. I am currently NYS certified as an Elementary Teacher, credentials can be shared upon request!

I worked with students on Autism Spectrum and those diagnosed Emotional Disturbance for about 3 years. Along the way, I have picked up some sign language and techniques to increase vocalizations and improve phonics from some very wonderful speech/language pathologists.

I moved into public school to work per diem doing assessments, as well as substituting, for another 2 years. Currently, I contract through a state program that helps pair students and their families with home services.

Most importantly, my approach to teaching is a mix between "traditional" and my own creative techniques. I have found that learning is done best when it is hands-on and involving multiple intelligences, as well as being fun and geared toward student interest! I have found that both myself and my students value their education more when it is made to be their "own".

I look forward to learning with you!

Phonics,

Phonics

In my current position as a Language Teacher, only 40% of my students are verbal and around 80% have vocalizations. For the past two years, I have worked along-side certified Speech/Language pathologists to tune my own phonemic awareness and to teach students how to become aware of how to hear, identify and manipulate English language phonemes. Because phonics focuses on increasing phonemic awareness to teach reading and writing, it is okay for beginners to focus strictly on audible sounds. Which is why I use a very tactile and visual approach by having students focus on where the sound is coming from - for example, the letter "b". It pops off your lips from a closed position to open position with a small "puff" of air. This entire movement with the ending vocalizations of the "b" sound, allows students to see how exactly they are forming their sounds. This approach can be used throughout the English Alphabet, and for breaking down troublesome words.

I have worked in a school for students diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum and with Emotional Disturbance for 3 years. I have training in Relationship Development Intervention (RDI), Physical and Psychological Management Training (PMT), 2 years' experience in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Verbal Behavior (VB) and coursework in Intro to Autism. As the rates of Autism rise in the United States, rates of ADD/ADHD also rise. Both ADD/ADHD and Autism remain along the so-called "spectrum of distraction".
