SUNY Albany (Mathematics)
I am currently in my last semester of study at SUNY Albany. Upon completion, I will have earned Bachelor of Science degrees with a major in both Mathematics and Physics. With my degrees I intend on becoming teacher certified in NYS like my father. Tutoring not only provides an opportunity to help you or your son, daughter, etc. develop an interest and understanding of math and physics, but also a chance for me to get hands on experience in preparation for my eventual career in teaching.
I have taken over 70 credit hours of both lower and upper level undergraduate mathematics involving not only strict problem solving but conceptual understanding, theory, and the rich history of mathematics and mathematicians as well. Mathematics is often challenging so I've learned to take a patient approach to its study which is what I will encourage during tutor sessions.
My original intent was to only minor in Physics at SUNY Albany. However after taking the requisite courses I wanted to learn much more. Physics describes the world around us using the language of mathematics. Having something to provide context for the mathematics I was also learning helped me immensely. As a tutor I will be able to thoroughly help the student understand how the physics and math are related so closely to one another. Physics can seem overwhelming to those studying it but with a patient and broad minded approach to problems and concepts, I will be able to help deepen our understanding of physics.
Math and Physics can be really fun but focused and patient work is required. At many schools it can be very difficult to get consistent one on one help in these subjects. Everyone has a unique way of viewing problems and concepts so it is important to take time one-on-one with a student to understand their current interpretation and further it from there. Math and Physics are valuable and practical areas of study that few people ever regret learning once they develop some form of understanding. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
