Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently working with children in a local Elementary school k-6. I am knowledgeable on the current core curriculum and state standards. I have test prep materials and guidelines regarding various subject matter for children that are at these grade levels. I have multiple years of clinical experience with children. More specifically, I have experience teaching children with language disorders a variety of skills such as recall, memory processing, auditory processing, sequencing, vocabulary and grammar. I am up to date with the NYS Common Core standards. I have taken multiple education classes in undergrad regarding reading and writing strategies and have currently utilized hands-on methods of teaching with children to aid them in all subject matters. This includes interactive games, group therapy, individual therapy and homework assignments for carryover purposes. I have four years of tutoring children at the Learning Center after school program for children of New Rochelle at Iona College.

Special Needs

I have clinical experience with children on the autism spectrum, children with ADHD and hearing impairments. This population is a huge part of my field, Speech-Language Pathology. I am currently working with children in a local Elementary Schools with these specific disabilities and am teaching them various strategies regarding recall, memory, vocabulary, syntax, semantics and language. Some strategies I utilize in therapy are behavioral modifications such as exercise balls and token reward system by using stickers or an ipad as reinforcement.

Study Skills

I am currently a graduate student at Long Island University- CW POST, receiving my master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology. I have been taught a variety of strategies in both undergrad and graduate school regarding study skills. I have learned effective ways to study for children, including memory skill sets. I have taught children in school how to organize their binders a certain way to maintain each subject. I have also taught children study strategies such as making note cards, highlighting key points, and re-writing definitions to help them study.
