Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am certified to teach English as a second language (ESL/ESOL) and have taught abroad and in the USA. I prefer a teaching method that helps motivate students and emphasizes the real-life use of language (role-play, games, pair and group work if available). Since students learn differently, I will assess your style and find what works for you.

GED

Preparing for the GED exam often goes hand in hand with improving study skills. My experience with students at risk of failing taught me that traditional methods of teaching don't work for everyone. Some students need an alternative such as the GED, and tutoring to prepare for the exam can be tailored to the student's individual needs and learning style.

IELTS

I am a certified TESL which has prepared me to tutor for all of the English as a foreign language tests, including the TOEFL, IELTS, and ESL/ESOL. I left this subject category out when I applied to the others. In addition, I have taught English as a foreign language in the schools for three years, in addition to tutoring high school, college, and adult populations for five years.

Psychology

I have worked as a psychotherapist for 27 years and completed graduate studies in clinical psychology. I have taught at the university level (undergraduate courses, in addition to many workshops and seminars on psychological topics and professional development courses.

Public Speaking

During my graduate training in Psychology and 30 year career as a psychotherapist, I facilitated groups and workshops focused on helping people perform public speaking. The focus of these groups was to reduce anxiety and gain confidence; to mentally "see oneself speaking in public". This was accomplished by the use of visual imagery, relaxation, and confidence building exercises.

Study Skills

I have worked with schools to help students-at-risk of failing establish good study habits. By helping them learn to prepare for studying, improving their motivation and focus on what they are studying, and establishing good time management skills for adequate periods of study, they are able to improve their grades, their self-esteem, and succeed in school.

TOEFL

As a certified teacher of English as a second language, I have worked with many students who must pass the TOEFL before entering US colleges, business people who are coming to work in the USA, or families who have relocated. The focus is on not only preparing to pass the language test itself, but also to reduce the test anxiety that many suffer and raise the student's confidence in their ability to master the subject.
