About Steve

I have taught literature, composition, and grammar at the college, secondary, and middle school levels. I am knowledgeable, patient, and skilled at meeting students' needs. The students that I have helped appreciate the attention that I give to them as individuals. I listen and strive to adjust my responses to their perspective. I am not just an expert who dispenses information and directions. This is especially important for students who are unsure of themselves. Having taught as long as I have, having developed curricula as an administrator, and having hired, observed, and evaluated many teachers, I am familiar with the range of tasks and challenges that students face. I do my best to determine the teacher's priorities and objectives. I then elicit and adapt the student's strengths to address those goals. In short, I pay attention and then employ a lifetime of personal and professional knowledge to help the student. Perhaps there are many tutors who can provide this depth of care and expertise, but I doubt it.

My strengths lie in teaching literature and composition, integrating reading and writing in ways that draw upon the student's life experience and previous reading. I am deeply familiar with the range of critical approaches and terminology. I have an MA in English literature and have completed many hours toward the PhD in English literature and English Education. In other words, I know what I'm talking about, and my many years of work with adolescents give me special abilities to guide students in their reading. My goal is to help them find interpretations that are as distinctly their own as possible. I am able to do this because of the breadth of knowledge and experience I bring to our discussion -- and then also because I listen.

I can go on about the value that I see in what I do. Given a long enough period, I can enhance a student's thinking and build confidence that in some cases would not develop otherwise. But really that goal is for me to know and strive for and for you and your child to recognize after we have parted company. I have learned over the years that people -- and especially teachers -- who brag about what they can do are to be distrusted. The best way to judge my work is by experiencing it and possibly by speaking with my students. I hope we can meet to discuss what I can offer your child.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I have been a school administrator and classroom teacher for 35 years. In that time I have counseled hundreds of students in their college plans, including financial aid, merit and scholarship applications. I have also helped many more with their college essays. I am familiar with the entire process of applications and with a wide variety of college options.

Study Skills

I have taught for 25 years in independent secondary schools and in the course of time taught study skills to hundreds of students. Different students have different needs. I listen closely to the student's description of how he or she studies and help him or her diagnose the problem. If necessary, I can start the student off at the simplest level and build up. But most likely, the student needs to fine-tune his or her strategies for work in a particular class that presents new demands. I can help him or her build new routines to meet them.
