About Vayola

Hi All!

My name is Vayola and I would love to help you get through chemistry. I've been teaching chemistry to high school students in the NYC public education system since 2004. I've taught low-level students and high-achieving students. During my tenure as a teacher, I've developed a chemistry curriculum that has proven to be very effective. Though chemistry is "hard," I have gotten very good at making it something anyone can understand.

I received my Bachelor's of Science in Chemistry from St. John's University. I went on to receive a Master's in Teaching in Secondary Education and Science from Pace University, a Master's of Business Administration from in Healthcare Administration from the University of Phoenix, and an Advanced Certificate as a School Building Leader from Queens College.

In addition, I was selected as a Master Teacher with Math for America. What this means is that I have access to even more resources that will help you achieve your goals when working with me. Though I am new to tutoring on Wyzant, I am very knowledgeable in my field and will help you succeed. Give me a chance to help you get chemistry!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I am a chemistry teacher. I have taught the subject since 2004. I am also a Math for America master teacher.

Regents

NYS Physical Settings/Chemistry Regents Examination

I can help you pass it! The content on the chemistry regents exam has not changed much in the past six years I've been teaching chemistry. Instead, I find that the questions are recycled and oftentimes re-worded or simply given different answer choices. The key strategies to passing this exam are as follows:

1. Know your vocabulary! This regents is notorious for using interchangeable terms in one questions. For example, you should know temperature is the same as average kinetic energy of the particles in sample. I've seen quite a few students fall victim to this exam because they do not know basic vocabulary.

2. Do well on the multiple choice questions! If you can get at least 35 of the 50 multiple choice questions correct on the regents, you will more than likely pass. Remember the test is broken down into four parts: Parts A and B-1 are multiple choice, while parts B-2 and C are long answer. The test is worth 85 points, of which 50 comes from the multiple choice sections. Focus on multiple choice questions from past exams and you should fare well. To be very honest, I have yet to see someone pass the exam without getting at least 75-80% of the multiple choice questions right.

3. Review the first semester's topics: matter and energy, the atom and atomic concepts, nuclear chemistry, the periodic table, electrons and light, and bonding. These topics make up the bulk of content being tested. Other topics include organic chemistry and the mathematics of chemistry.

4. Relax! If you've been studying and reviewing all along, don't fry your brain right before the test. Allow yourself, in particular your noggin, to rest.
