Hello! I'm Katie and I'm a recent graduate of Carnegie Mellon University. I graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Mechanical Engineering and will be returning to Carnegie Mellon to complete my Master's of Science in Mechanical Engineering next semester. Carnegie Mellon holds a special place in my heart because it combines my interest in STEM and my passion in music into one place. I had wonderful professors, teaching assistants, and classmates who taught through example and real world application, which I found extremely helpful for STEM. Some of the best teachers I had were other students, so I know the value in learning from someone similar to you. In terms of music, I was able to surround myself with an array of people who all found love in some sort of musical expression, which allowed me to understand how music really is more than just "another skill to learn".

My most recent teaching experience was the summer of my freshman year in college when I went to China to teach English in a day camp. I taught beginner English to a class of 15+ Chinese students age 11-17 at two 10-day camps in Beijing and Shanghai. I had to create my own lesson plans with a few guidelines and taught the class for an hour each day. I also became a mentor to a group of four students at each camp, and essentially served as a camp counselor to them as well. The experience really taught me how to handle many students with different personalities and skill sets. I have also tutored one-on-one; in high school, I tutored a younger student in geometry and algebra for two years once a week. The purpose of this tutoring was to help struggling students, so we would go over her most recent quizzes and tests together. I strongly value uncovering the root issue students have with certain topics and then working through that; being told, "just do it this way" or "it is the way it is" will help no one. My experience in teaching music is far less formal. I was an assistant music director at Pierce Country Day Camp for two summers in high schoo

I took NYSSMA evaluations up to level 6 for piano and received full points on my level 6 evaluation when I took it at 16 years old. I have played full pieces, individual movements, orchestral accompaniments, jazz pieces, musical theater pieces, and the occasional pop song for fun. I know the basics of music theory (time signatures, rhythms, major scales, basic chords) and have two years of experience working with young children in teaching music.
